(NC)-The road trip is one of the true rights of passage for many families, but for some the most frustrating part of a road trip is getting lost.
One person may want to stop and ask for directions, while the other does not want to embarrass themselves by admitting they're lost. Now, many may never have to worry about arguing over directions again.
New vehicles are incorporating more and more technology that keeps passengers entertained, but many are also adding features to help drivers keep on track.
Navigation screens have been available on more expensive models, now a new service is being offered at a more affordable price for all consumers.
The new service, called OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation from General Motors, allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step audio directions to their vehicles through their OnStar system.
Audio directions are then automatically played through the vehicle's radio as they are needed, triggered by the system's GPS capabilities. This allows drivers to be led to their destination while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
"With OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, we're demystifying navigation technology to bring safe, simple GPS-based routing to the mass market at a fraction of the cost of other systems," says Dave Mitchell, manager, OnStar Canada. "The service will be available in approximately one million GM cars and trucks in 2007 and will be expanded further within the portfolio in 2008."
Without the argument over directions, what will the next road trip disagreement be? Where to stop for dinner or what DVD to watch?
