Insurance companies know it's better to have a good driver as a client. In order to do this many auto insurers give discounts to people who meet a higher criteria than the average insured.
How Can I Get a Discount on My Car Insurance Policy?
1. Be a Good Driver
If you have a clean driving record, no accidents, no moving violation tickets, no points on your drivers license, you are considered to be a good driver. If you have had accidents in the past, or points on your license, but was three to five years ago, you may qualify as a good driver today. Check with your auto insurance agent.
If you have had any dwi/dui charges in the past, how long has it been? If it has been longer than 7 years you too may be able to get a discount on your car insurance rates.
2. Have You Taken a Driving Course?
If you have had any kind of driver education classes, or driver training courses, from an instructor who has been certified you should be able to get a discount on your car insurance policy.
3. Are You a Good Student?
Some car insurance companies give discounts for student drivers who have achieved a grade of B or higher.
4. Do You Go to School Far Away From Home? Was Your Car Left at Home?
Another student discount for your car insurance that you may be eligible for if you go to a school that is at least 100 miles from your home. The catch to this one is you must not have your car at school.
5. Taken Any Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Courses?
Your local office of motor vehicles may offer a certified course to assist drivers learn how to prevent accidents from happening. If you have taken one of these courses you should talk to your car insurance agent about available discounts for your policy.
Car insurance companies also offer policy discounts for the safety equipment in your vehicle.
1. Seat Belt/Shoulder Restraints
If your car has seat belts and shoulder restraints you should be getting a discount on your car insurance premium. It may be an even greater discount if you also have a driver side airbag or a dual airbags system.
2. Abs/Anti-Lock Braking System
If you have an anti-lock braking system or Abs you should be getting a discount on your car insurance.
3. Anti-Theft Devices
Most insurance companies do not give you a discount for every anti-theft device you may have. Your insurance company should, however, give you a discount for alarm system, or an active or passive disabling system. I
