Since 1953, the Corvette has evolved with the times. It is a true work in progress, building on its strengths and improving with every new model. This year, GM unveiled the iconic line's newest offspring : the 2008 Corvette.
Over the years, the 'Vette has established itself as America's premiere sports car. With the new model, they're hoping to put it in front of the world's finest for its class.
Corvette's coupes and convertibles have always featured one of the best cost-to-performance ratio. The latest effort is no exception. At a $46000 base price, it leaves little to ask for and packs plenty in both the power and luxury departments. The focus on various exterior and interior refinements in the new model will serve to reinforce the luxury status that the car rightfully deserves.
Features
It houses a front-mounted LS3 6.2-liter V8 engine, producing 430 bhp and 575 Nm of maximum torque. The automatic version can accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in around 4.4 seconds and reaches an impressive top speed of 306 kph.
No numbers have been released for the manual version, but it is expected to be the same or a bit higher. They offer an optional dual-mode exhaust system upgrade, similar in design and function to the system used on the Z06, which can increase engine output to 436 bhp and a maximum torque of 581 Nm.
The highly-regarded Z06 edition will also return with a 7.0-liter V8 engine dishing out 505 bhp, keeping its title as the fastest, most powerful and most technologically forward production vehicle in Corvette's long, historic line.
The automatic gearbox features six-speed paddle controls, recalibrated from the previous model for faster shifts and sportier feel. The manual transmission has been upgraded as well for a more effortless performance. The rack-and-pinion steering has also been improved to create better feel at all driving speeds.
It is supported by double wishbone suspension on both ends, with front and rear stabilizer bars. Wheels are split-spoke cast aluminum measuring 18 and 19 inches, front and rear, respectively. They come in a "sparkle-silver" finish. The car weighs 3350 lbs.
Responding to criticisms about its bare basic interiors, the new cabin is covered with luxurious two-tone leather, wrapping the instrument panel, door pads and seats with various trim enhancements including brushed aluminum accents. It is packed tight with on-board treats such as OnStar with available turn-by-turn navigation, iPod jack, XM radio, and auto-dimming rear view mirrors.
Value
Packed with such high-end features, the Corvette is an unbelievable value for its price. Expect it to make waves for the next couple of years.
Production is expected to start in July of 2007.
