(NC)-An RBC Insurance/Ipsos Reid survey found that only 51 per cent of Canadians have an emergency supply kit in their car that includes first aid supplies, blankets or extra clothing and other essential items.
Winter months can bring severe weather and greatly jeopardize road conditions.
Between black ice, freezing rain or snow storms, unpredictable winter weather can challenge even the most experienced driver and leave them stuck out in the cold.
The following tips can ensure you safely reach your destination this winter.
. Prepare your vehicle with a winter maintenance check-up
Check your battery, belts and hoses, radiator, oil, lights, brakes, exhaust system, heater/defroster, wipers and ignition system.
. Store a winter car kit in your vehicle
The kit should include: a shovel, compass, road flares, extra warm clothing and footwear, first aid kit and blanket, emergency food pack, booster cables, matches, fire extinguisher, extra fuel line antifreeze, road maps and flashlight.
. Be winter ready before every ride
Always have sufficient windshield washer fluid. Keep your gas tank at least half full all winter and check air pressure in your tires often, as it decreases in colder weather.
. Consider using winter tires
Winter tires significantly improve driving safety by providing better traction and handling through snow, slush and on ice.
. Remove snow and ice from all windows, lights, mirrors, hood and roof
Store a windshield scraper and small broom for easy ice and snow removal. Ensure the interior of the windows are fog-free for better visibility.
. Drive according to current road and weather conditions
Slow down and avoid passing vehicles in poor weather conditions. Keep a safe distance between vehicles and avoid braking suddenly in slippery conditions.
. Travel with a cell phone
In case of an emergency, pull over to a safe spot to call for assistance or let a passenger call for you.
