The Twilight cars...The Porsche 911 Turbo. It's gotten a lot of attention from the Twilight Saga. It's the car that belongs to Alice Cullen, a vampire character in the Twilight Saga and Movie.
There are few other cars on the road that inspire the same respect and awe when viewed through the rearview mirror. Of course, it won’t be long before the 911 has swapped its appearance in the mirror for a full-on view of its tail lights as they disappear into the darkness ahead – the vehicle is one of the fastest production cars which can be legally driven on public highways. This German beast contrasts oddly with Alice Cullen, the sprightly sister of the vampire clan who pilots one with the skill that only the supernatural possess.
With a rear mounted engine that is enough to make even the most experienced race driver pause, the 911 Turbo’s driving dynamics place it amongst the sports car elite. A unique weight balance and full-time all-wheel drive make for tons of grip – however, the car is also known for being a bit edgy around the limits of its performance envelope. How edgy? Well, with 480 horsepower available with the simple push of the gas pedal, it’s clear that this land rocket isn’t meant for just anyone.
Responsible for powering this exotic chunk of automotive mayhem is a 3.6 liter, twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. With an astounding 460 lb-ft of torque also in the mix, the 911 Turbo can hit 60 miles per hour in only 3.7 seconds. Combined with a top speed of just over 190 miles per hour, there are few other vehicles on the road which can challenge the 911 when it comes to pure performance. A special engine management package can provide an additional boost of torque that maxes out at 505 lb-ft for very short periods of time, should drivers require the ability to tear a hole in the time / space continuum. A 6-speed manual or 5-speed Tiptronic S semi-automatic are the two available transmission choices. Although purists may argue against it, Porsche claims that the Tiptronic provides for shifts that are faster than any human could achieve. No word on just how fast a vampire can work the clutch, however.
From the outside, it is immediately clear that the 911 Turbo shares the same basic body shape as the other, lesser editions of the popular sports coupe. However, there are some very obvious differences. The 911 Turbo’s aerodynamic package is quite aggressive, featuring a large wing and huge air ducts on the front bumper in order to suck in as much cooling oxygen as possible for the brakes and radiator. Further ducts are carved into the vehicle’s rear haunches, and the back of the Turbo features a bulging bumper replete with splitter. Special wheels and yellow brake calipers also help to distinguish the Turbo from its more pedestrian brethren.
The Porsche 911 Turbo stands at the apex of everyday supercars – the kind of vehicle that can be driven to the grocery store, in the rain, and then taken to the race track the next day.
