Know What to do if You're Involved in an Automobile Accident This Winter

(NC)-Winter weather typically increases your risk of having an automobile accident.

A study by the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction shows that snowfall increases the risk of minor accidents by 80 per cent, while freezing rain increases the risk by 70 per cent.

As winter gets into full swing, it's important to be prepared.

Here are some things to remember if you're in an accident:

. Check for injuries, but don't move injured individuals. Call 911.

. If your vehicle is drivable, immediately move it far off the road.

. Get information from everyone involved including names, addresses, telephone numbers, driver's licence, plate numbers and insurance details.

. Record details of the accident - How it happened, time, date, location, speed, weather and road conditions. Take pictures if possible.

. Depending on your province, you may need to report your accident to collision-reporting centres or directly to police. Contact local police to determine where you need to go.

. Many insurance companies prefer that you call them right away. Companies like RBC General Insurance Company will manage details including talking to the other driver, arranging a tow truck, providing estimates on the spot, contacting police, arranging a rental car and even contacting family and friends if necessary.

. Don't employ the services of towing companies that appear at the accident scene unless directed by police. Call your insurance provider instead for assistance.
