"Tires are the only contact your vehicle has with the road," says John Nielsen, director of AAA's Approved Auto Repair Network. "Drivers accustomed to driving in snow regions might want to consider investing in tires specifically designed for greater traction in snow, slush, and icy conditions."

Icy roads and heavy snowfall can make winter driving more of a challenge. For added safety before your next long winter drive, AAA recommends that you determine if your tires are equipped to provide the performance and protection you need.

Determining which tire is right for you depends on where you live and what type of driving you do. Snow tires are the most common solution for driving in regions with heavy snowfall because they are designed to provide adequate traction in snow.

When winter driving becomes more severe, nothing provides better traction than snow chains and studded snow tires. By using metal chains and spikes, these tires provide the ultimate traction in snowy and icy conditions.

Prior to investing in these options, AAA recommends vehicle owners identify if snow chains and studded snow tires are permitted where they are traveling.

* When purchasing snow tires, make sure they are labeled M/S (mud and snow). This will help ensure that you are in compliance with any local or state regulations on the use of snow tires.
