1996 impreza outback leak in rear hatch- not the tail light Sign In

1996 subaru impreza outback with leak coming in to the rear hatch. I have already resealed the rear left tail light housing. If I pull off the access panel to the tail lights, the water seems to be coming down from inside the body from somewhere above the tail light housing. Could the mounting points of the roof rack leak and make its way to the rear or the hatch?

Best thing to do is remove all the trim back there. Then get inside with a flash light and have someone spray it down with a water hose so you can see where it is leaking from.

Just some thoughts on finding leaks like this and others: Non automotive stuff can help isolate source. Painter's tape and another that is out there is "removable" caulking is handy as it's a bit sticky and molds to seal and does leave a little mess on nice paint to clean off but doesn't hurt anything and can leave it or remove it years later.

Been there done that with putting someone in a trunk or something and MAKE DANG SURE YOU CAN GET THEM OUT!

I have taken off the interior trim pieces in the hatch with no luck on seeing where it is originating from. Next step will be to remove roof rack and reseal the mounting points

Heres a tried and true way of finding the souce of a leak. Start with a dry car . Take a container of baby powder ,the kind with all the holes in top. Puff a light coating in suspect area . Close up and spray throughly with hose .
The water will leave tracks in the powder. Follow them to the source.
