This is my cousin's car which I am borrowing. I went to put some gas into it and heard something fall to the pavement after I took out the gas nozzle. I picked up the clip, put in the car's coffee holder and drove off. Then I tried it when I came home, when I pull on the gas filler release at the bottom of the driver's seat the little door to the gas filler pipe won't open.

I opened up the trunk, pulled aside the carpeting on the wall containing the gas filler pipe, and what I saw is in the first pic. The clip that fell out of the gas filler compartment is shown second.

What can I do to get the filler compartment door to open and get some gas into the gas tank and get the filler door to operate correctly?

Argh! Don't break it - YET. Just from top pic looks like you could just push the pin back and the door would open - AYOR. I can look exactly at a '99 Camry and be sure how it works the cable is clearly broken now if not working from inside I would have to see this to know what's practical to do and NOT leave that door flapping in the breeze as it's body color painted alone to redo would be costly if damaged so don't.

Chances are if VERY carefully you just pushed from the back you could get it open without damage unsure if it would lock again it's probably just a friction type would let go.

No promises I think they changed body the next model year or soon after '99 so need exact look to know what you could do without harm and what to do to fix it.

BTW - second pic came out quite fuzzy hard to know if that's from the car at all or what?
