1999 GMC Safari Hatch Rust Sign In

I have a 1999 GMC Safari van that has a severely rusting back hatch. Its in an area that takes a lot of impact so I dont think bondo would be a good option to fill the rust hole. Anyone have any idea how I can patch this?

Here is a rear view of the area

Here is a view looking up with the hatch open

Re: 1999 GMC Safari Hatch Rust Sign In

I hear you big time! Live it.

First, if this is the panel (door) and not contiguous body metal get a whole door that isn't rusted at all used and have it painted.

If not just isolated to door look under and all over vehicle before going too nuts or deciding on how much to spend. Best is new OE (makes you wonder giving them another try) but is best.

Next is search out Chinese (usually) aftermarket sections that the vehicle wasn't made with OE but when common enough you can get just those pieces, bumpers and common stuff to keep it still metal and if done at least OK can last a while but new of that stuff goes much faster than OE most of the time and if not known it might be that junk now from damage back some unless you absolutely know it's not from new.

Up to you to DIY it or if the thing is just bad there get it better and looking good too. Bondo works but it too is hacking it for total holes like that.

ASK a body shop if need be for suggestions and quotes plus a look underside in general frame and all. At some point it's so invasive you lose a vehicle to it.

It can pick on one area and limited to that but know before you go crazy with expense as patch work only lasts so long depending on how done and you could be back again not kidding within a year if just juiced with bondo.

FYI - live in a rust belt area and holes (any reason) thru body reject ANY vehicle for a legit inspection sticker as a safety problem!

Suks - Good luck,

T
