65 Impala SS 283 18007 miles minor body repairs? Sign In

I just got a '65 Impala SS with 18K miles on it. It's all original, I'm the second owner.

It has very minor body imperfections.

Would it be a good thing to make repairs and, I'd guess, repaint, or should I keep it pristine (well, as pristine as it is now)?

Thanks in advance,

Hayseed50

Not sure. What do you plan on doing with the vehicle? If your going to make it a show car and want to win blue ribbon awards, having the imperfections repaired would be a good idea. Maybe you should have a reputable body shop have a look at it. Maybe they can do repairs without respraying the entire car.

If this is well stored, great chrome and rubber parts w just some paint issues let a serious pro fix the paint flaws. Not my trade and not easy to do if in the trade such that you can't tell it was touched. Done wrong will make it much harder to do right later if that's in the cards.

IMO this is a car of interest so if not wrecked now get real help for finish work and store it properly,

That's great advice, thanks gents Wink

I'm trying to find a body pro who doesn't use bondo, it should not be necessary anyway. There are only two very minor flaws.

It has been stored under various roofs, never outside more than a day or two. From the looks of them, I'd say the tires are the same ones it left the showroom with. The interior, running gear, chrome, glass... superb.

Thanks again Smile

The only alternative to Bondo is lead and good luck finding anyone that can do that. You have to use filler. You just try to keep it to bare minimum.

Good luck getting it the best. I dare say even good body shops might be reluctant to go that "anal" doing it perfectly. Ya , I think lead work is gone.

Scripts and emblems wouldn't be just stuck on but would have a back bolt, speed nut or some friction fit with prongs. I wouldn't put up with trying to tape those things off no matter what it took and some are a pest. I do all that or did back when then car is out for the final paint last. No overspray anywhere. Just find the right place and person,

Thanks guys.

I'm thinking someone with the basic body tools, acetylene, and knowledge could do this just fine. It's that minor.

No overspray for me, I'd be glad to pay the price for the real deal.

Thanks again,

If you can and want, post some pics when all done. Pretty sure front fenders have the emblems of engine size I find interesting as more might want the monster block ones but all were good fun,

Oh well.... I uploaded some pix to photobucket, but the links won't take here. Tongue

I'll go find a tutorial on the topic and post some later. Wink

If it works... Edit: and it did. Just off the trailer here. 283, 4v, slush bucket. Numbers match. Professional overhaul included .10 over bore, all new pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets. Tranny was gone through at the same time. Two years ago...

Hey, I was raised on a homestead, what can I say?

It's a great house. We built it, the shop, the loafing shed / chicken coop, the barn and a bunch of fencing on 3.1 acres of sagebrush from '91 to '98.

Lots of work, but it's home. We are retired now and have no desire to move to a city environment. We are in Summit County, UT...

Re: 65 Impala SS 283 18007 miles minor body repairs? Sign In

Par Excellence! Nice, nice, nice! Can I move in? Just kidding.
Man, a few of us fight with rust so bad it's like they designed it to do it. OMG, can't touch two until we get a nice good rain AFTER it's all over (salting roads for Winter, Massachusetts) in has to be the rust capitol of the world! Out ~$1,500 just to fabricate a flucking frame horn that holds a snow plow on! ^@##%^#$%Y&$%^&* you figure out the language I have to say about it.

Damn - can't set tools down - it's a disease! Still like it, a burb city West of Boston.
Does this in no time. No shat - I plow because I have to at my location or screw it. I don't even leave till at least dry and still this....

Here's how some can be patched......

How about this surprise just doing a grease and oil job......

Still there are total nut case care collectors and restorers right here within a mile. Private collections up to 200 cars in just one barn with elevator not open to public.

Can't find the pic (was pulled) of Miss Packard a hand made mahogany classic lake type boat w a brand new crated Packard engine from WWII meant for tanks! Saw that pup. I haven't seen the finish on any fine piano as sharp as the wood detail on it. One garage just for it that hides it that must have cost zillions. Has to be worth a few mil! FOUND IT! See if this shows. It's less than one mile from me.........

Sorry for the rant. Take care of your SS! That is so original looking and not messed up get the best work you can find.

Can't and wont post pics of my own crap. Good luck with that, Tom

I feel your pain Tom. The Bonneville Salt Flats are only an hour from here. Utah is famous for salting roads, even in subdivisions and on county roads.

Our '65s are in the barn for the Winter. Neither of them have ever been on a salted road and we'll keep it that way Wink

We have a few neighbors who do the same with their classics...

Funny how salt ridden areas still have gear head collector populations...

Beautiful boat!

Re: 65 Impala SS 283 18007 miles minor body repairs? Sign In

Haven't been to Utah since 1967 mostly to see the Great Salt Lake. Spent a school year in Denver, Colorado TMK whole state outlawed use of salt! Snagged a rust free crap can car almost 20 years old, zero rust but sun damaged badly.

They use coal slag from power plants instead. Dirty as all get out but doesn't harm anything and can't mess up the water supply which is a problem. N. Platte River runs dry in Summer - not used to that around here, Tom

Ha!

It's not that I don't like Mass, I enjoyed my time there.

True about Boston, though, I'm convinced all the cars there are wired for the horn to start blaring when the car is started, and not stop until it's ignition switch is off and the key is removed...

Re: 65 Impala SS 283 18007 miles minor body repairs? Sign In

Beantown as I call it is actually a VERY small bit or real estate. No place for a car as it was a full blown city long before cars. No place to park or part with a fortune.

Had a boat at Constitution Marina for years and spent any free time in there. Deal at the time, just $600/Mo. to tie up to a dock and have "shore power and water" BUT that included parking! Scared to death to leave a car there, many restos done by me. Jeez, would take half the engine with me so it couldn't be stolen as it was once the car theft capitol of the US. Not nice is to park you have to leave your slip # on the dash with card you got from the marina.

Sounds reasonable? NO! Look at the car and see the slip empty you know that person isn't there! WTF, why not just say "steal me" in neon lights? Guarded on weekends but I was there more weekdays.

Mass: Still nice in ways and AFUed in others.........
Tom
