67 DeVille is this asbestos??? Sign In

Hey folks,

I've been over seas for two years so had to store my 67 Cadillac DeVille. Just in the process of getting her going again.

I want to attach a pic but can't figure out how. Anyway Some insulation is falling down from behind the dash it's brown and looks like fibrous insulation. Question: is this asbestos? Is this safe to clean up and drive or am I rolling around in a cancer chamber? Thanks for the reply

No, it's not asbestos. It looks like the carpet padding. You must have a critter living in there and digging the stuff out.

Thanks so much for the fast reply! so you think maybe it's coming up from under the carpet rather than from some sketchy stuff behind the dash? Could be right, def a critter getting into stuff.

Ditto - NOT asbestos. There is in OE brakes, exhaust items, engine gaskets.

Get the critter out as these are going to be a pill to find good dash parts for.
Just read your reply- lots of assorted padding used in these (owned a few) like sound proofing that looks like inside of a life jacket, carpet well padded and so on. Firewall heavily noise proofed from new and as many places as they could find to insulate this exact year car. Not the next,

T

There is likely some in places under the dash and kick panels also.

Sorry - edited my post rather than a new. Look back. There's insulation everywhere it can be. In plastic bags of it or like foil covered and sticky to metal things too.

Asbestos is of course dangerous to BREATHE not just by itself,

Right I'm not worried about engine or drive train asbestos, I was just concerned if this insulation was asbestos it would already be pretty disturbed and vacuuming would just stir it all up even more.

Actually I yanked the insulated hood blanket and tossed it, pretty sure those are all asbestos.

You're right, they seem to have insulted everything. I guess to keep it nice and quiet on the road.

Don't breathe anything from a car old or not. Asbestos is mined so just a type of rock but was used for everything from insulation, floor tiles, ceiling tiles, pipe insulation.

It's no good breathing the fiberglass crap either or whatever it is made from. Lead, mercury switches and all that just fine if you don't eat it or breathe it.

Throw out vacuum bag if you clean it all up just anyway. Better yet don't use a household vacuum for cars at all and go back into a dwelling,

You could line your hamster cage with it or make a nice pillow for the little buddy that is hanging out inside your car.

I think that's what the critter had in mind.
