The bottom of my tailgate on my truck is starting to rust about 8 inches long and about an inch and a half high. It's beyond repair and I'd have to get a new tailgate. Rather than paying $600ish for a new tailgate, I came up with an idea. Keep in mind I have absolutely zero experience with body work so this might be the dumbest thing you've ever heard. Could I somehow remove the paint that is bubbled (maybe use a utility knife to cut around raised edge?), sand it, prime it, and put Bondo even to the rest of the paint? This would at least serve as a temporary fix until I get the money for a new one. I found a decal that is the length of my tailgate to cover the area up and wanted it to lay flat. Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sure, if you don't need it to last more than a couple months.

Rust compares to Cancer. Once it gets established, nothing will stop it or kill it.

We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

? What is this would help but work with just it has a tailgate. Why just that part? Whole truck is probably in trouble or that was replaced with another along the way with a lousy one and or "cloned" ones don't hold up as well.

Either way you don't win fixing rust just buy some time so don't spend too much effort for just a tailgate most places you don't need one at all?
