Need advice for 99 Civic Hood Minor Damage Sign In

So I came down to visit my sister this weekend and I noticed the hood of her 1999 Honda Civic is all messed up. She’s not sure exactly how it got that way, thinks bird poop corroded it and water got underneath. There’s no rust, it just looks like the plastic is pealing off, and where it has pealed off the paint has lost it’s shine, where it still remains the car looks like the rest of the car/the unaffected area. She got an estimate for $800. I’m thinking for that price I could just go to a scrap yard buy a hood off some broken down civic and have that put on for much cheaper. Or, and this is why I’m here, is there a way I can just peel off the rest of that plastic and use the appropriate car spray paint to reseal the hood. I put some pics up on Flickr, with links below incase it helps to see it.

As always your advice and help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The clear coat is peeling off. You won't find one in the boneyard that doesn't have the same problem.

Good point I didn't think of that, but I've also never been to a scrap yard.

So that leaves me with my other question, is it possible to peal off the rest of the clear coat and then reapply myself. Does that seam like a reasonable DIY.

If not, do any other auto body experts feel that this is an $800 job. I just want to make sure it's appropriate before she's goes and pays that much.

Thanks again everyone for your help!

All the old paint has to be stripped, then primed, sanded, sealed, painted and clear coated. Not something that you wake up one morning knowing how to do.

$800 is high if it's only the hood he is doing but I suspect the roof and trunk lid may have issues too.

Pete: Unlikely to find a good hood in a salvage yard. Can't speak for everywhere but local places to me would not take just a hood but require purchase of whole front if somehow the vehicle was there for rear collision (rare) or mechanical reasons not all that common to those cars.

Body work isn't easy or cheap. $800 - I think I can fill up my truck with gas for about that! Small beans today,

Tom

You could rice it up a little bit. I actually think this paint job is wicked. Some of those painters are pure geniuses.

Have seen some of that at car shows. Unreal and even up close it's amazing,

Tom
