Roof replacement ford maverick Sign In

Recently I purchased a ford maverick 2 door . When I got the car the previous owner told me the roof would need replacing . When I looked at that was for sure it was covered in vinyl and there wasn't a smooth spot . There must have been a thousand bumps . I have a new roof off another car . I am wondering which way to go here . I am thinking of taking it to a body shop for repair . My thinking is take the car and see how they want to proceed as far as whats cheapest . Or tell them I have another top ? Then see what they say . I am curious what kind of ballpark price I am looking at >

A question first > Is this the US model Ford Maverick first sold in I think 1970? I didn't think any came with a vinyl roof but could be wrong.

If like hail damage now and nothing really wrong except ugly from that and this is not ever to be collectible I'd ask what it would take to fix the dings/marks close enough to re-vinyl it with a bit more of a padded vinyl and you'd never see it.

Whole roof metal welded in then painted is a lot of fussy work to get just right and this never was my exact area of the trade.

Ask in person with the car what a body shop of your liking suggests given the car as a whole what would cost what and work out to please you too.

If that is rust bubbles from a bad problem at some point IDK why it picked on the roof?

Most of the cars from the era were rust prone. The foam padding underneath the vinyl would suck in moisture and, of course, rot the metal skin under it.

Depends on how much is rotted out. If the structure is good, they may be able to skin it using the other roof. Price will probably depend on how much time it will take to re-skin the roof and the cost of the materials. Don't hurt to swing into a body shop and get an estimate.

 Yes this is one from the 70's ...I tore part of the top off and there were wholes as big as a 50 cent piece . Around the top of the rear window is a hole about 3/4 inc X 2 inches .

Holes! That doesn't sound so good for fixing what's there IMO.

You said you would ask or if had another roof? TMK - roof metal would be a panel spot welded in top area of windshield, rear window and sides along rain gutter then soldered part way down rear upper quarter panel you could find with a magnet where.

That piece to totally replace from probably only used now done to OE would total the value of this car if new not function the full blown repair like nothing was wrong type fix.
Do you have a whole unrusted body at least the top or what?

Strong guess is that the roof of this car is critical to the strength of the body in general being IMO a fairly weak (on purpose to be lighter) unit body.

Googled it as N. American production was 1970-1977 but made and sold many elsewhere likely body was much the same.

Again - I can't think of a one with an OE vinyl roof option new. Definitely not a padded one so that was conceal a problem or a wish in it's history.

As DS said this was a "rusty" time for cars in general this one no exception.

As said it really should be look at by an auto body tech for what your options are. I can't say if practical or could be made just serviceable from here. My guess is the right shop could fix this with plenty of time to do so welding up areas to restore it's integrity to be usable and look OK if you find someone who would take it on in spare or down time. Would take many hours but little actual parts/material costs.

Another guess is that if it got weak enough windshield and back window would break if the roof wasn't strong enough at some point.

I'd also want to know if headliner can be saved in this fix or how that would be dealt with? Only asking where you might fix or give up based on costs by the place and person who could and would take this on and your pain tolerance for price is going to tell,
