Rust forming, don't know why Sign In

Hello friends,

I recently was given my first car, a 1989 Volvo 240dl with a broken odometer. A dream come true. I quickly learned that it had a giant rust hole beneath the driver's seatish area(see pics). I am almost done patching it up but here is the thing: I don't know how it began. Here's what I know: it is only on the driver's side, and after spraying the doors and windshield with a hose for 5 or so minutes I determined that there is no problem with the seals. The previous owners say that at some point it was sitting for a couple months with a water bottle spilled where the rust hole is but would that really be enough to make this hole? Also, there are little rust spots forming all around the sheet metal (including a few holes in some places[this is also pictured from below]). This makes me think it wasn't just a rock chip or some other random damage to the sealant. Anyway, I am almost done with the patch but I don't want the rust to reform in a year or something! I don't know much about fixing cars (because I have never before had one) so hopefully someone who is more knowledge can tell me what the heck happened.

Nevermind, I can't figure out how to upload a photo so there will be no pics for the time being.

Happy today

Pics are iffy depends on your device cooperting with this site's tricks. You described it just fine will do.

Congrats on your first car I trust will be a great learning experience.
Rust is just the end all nightmare is never usually fixed you patch it up as you have and hope it's lasts a while please check or get help (an auto body shop) for a glance to know it's not dangerous to integrity of the parts that must be strong at least.

Why you get rust - just where you said? Easy one actually. You or prior owners for an '89 OMG sport that could be made in '88 and being used so think of the time on it (It's not old to me it is to a vehicle) that moisture get under carpet which is sealed in almost anything made out there. Once would do to have salty shoes or another reason a corrosive, wet mix of something frequently used for melting snow/ice but could be another source?
History for this may be lost. That will stay there and eat away till it make a hole you can't believe and seems it happened.
Correct strong patching it will return unfortunately without insane work, removal of seats, interior parts and cut all effected metals out for new stuff welded in THAN when or if carpet can be dealt with or cleaned get serious more time.
Look for seat bolts usually thru floors, seal belt anchors. Look for the spots you would jack this car up by which is behind front wheels and in front of rear wheels see an arrow or notch.
That's well described for just changing a tire with graphics around where spare is and owner's manuals. If that's messed up its real trouble.

FIRST CAR! Enjoy and don't let this ruin your day or time with it there will be another someday that's a better start at LEAST THE PRICE WAS RIGHT!

I'd put about all of them better than average. Bet this has a hole in the carpet or vinyl put in cars where your heel sits for "gas pedal" and just water or horrors if salt got in that it can't get out. I is ONLY one side that's a reason.
Vehicles or metals of whatever have rusted since forever even low grades of stainless can rot thru.

OP didn't hit back so we don't know it isolated or this was just exposed to too much for it in general only noticed that IDK again why just the one side except as mentioned,
T
