clear coat thickness

Local Body Shop repaired my 2016 Challenger. clear coat has orange peel I would like to color sand and buff myself. how do I know there's enough clear coat to be able to do that?

Well, I'm sure we don't either. You either have to ask the guy that painted it of take your chances.

if I sand thru clear in some areas will I have to redo base coat or just apply more clear?

This is new in my book - who painted it and why are you about to really make it a problem?
No, you aren't going to just sand off clear and put just that back. Whatever reason it was touched at all this new and isn't or wasn't fixed to perfection when you saw it next probably seriously wasn't done properly now making this lots harder to make right again by professionals. There's barely a choice as most people don't have a dedicated painting booth to spray in, right temps and air clear of the smallest dust. It's hard enough but a hood will really look like crap if you try to fake it,

Yes, as long as you stop as soon as you rub through, you will be able to clear coat that panel again.
You really shouldn't be doing that much sanding anyway. Wet sand the high points off with 1500 and then use a buffer. If you aren't extremely experiences in using a buffer, then leave this job to a professional because that is where the damage can be done easily. Be VERY careful near any edges.

Not true. I looked at 3 other shops before selecting. Read reviews and toured the facility. This body shop is probably one of the oldest and largest in so cal. "Jim and Jack's collision" Allstate paid $11,000.

Well, if you're always having a problem with workmanship quality and never get it satisfactorily done, something is wrong either with your choices in shops or your expectations of the final product.
