convert 1997 intrepid into truck?

I have a 1997 dodge intrepid (4 door car) and I am thinking about making it into a truck. I pretty much just want to make a truck bed behind the front seat - after chopping a bunch of stuff off of it. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? I haven't done much with cars, and I haven't welded. I am thinking I'd build the bed out of 2x4s and plywood with deck screws and attach it as much as possible I guess my main concern is the integrity of the undercarriage if I remove the top of the back end. If I had more money, of course I'd prefer to buy a truck, but what I have is the car, and it is wrong shape right now. Thanks for all constructive input.

NO, NO, NO!!!! Did you leave the cap off the glue? Not a chance for even the best redneck move. The roof of the car is part of it's strength so forget it. Get a trailer to haul what you need, installed properly, hitch, lighting and all, T

I think it's a great idea. I think you should mortgage your house to start a business making these. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Lol. No, I never leave the cap off, it wastes good fumes. I get it, you're a moderator, you have to be forceful in defense of safety. No problem. The trailer thing isn't what I want, but I agree that removing large pieces of the structure would decrease the strength of the car. Maybe if I ripped out the back seat, the rear window, the trunk and the section between the missing trunk and window I'd be able to make it work. Does anyone have any more constructive advice, or it just me and mr. catnip?

Ah, great. While I was responding two more moderators chipped in with what seems to be more disparagement. Seriously. Constructive?

Have you considered turning it into a space ship. You could go further with it.

Damn. I'd like to say "proof of concept!", but... did it have to be so dang ugly?

I'd hate to be the in the passenger seat of that car. You'd have frost bite on one ear...LOL I guess it is better to see what it would look like than build it and find out it is ugly. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No problem, guys. I guess since this is a one-problem per thread sort of thing, the one kudo for solution goes to Discrete. Not really a solution but he did post a relevant pic and was the only one of you who wasn't obnoxious. I'll just be going now and take my car question with me. Obviously you boys are very busy here with your mini fridges by your Friday night computer recreation. I hope you have tremendous loads of laffs at the poor sods who don't have the cash to buy their solutions fresh out of the box. You guys are ALL moderators? Nice. I'd hate to see the ones who didn't make the cut. All the best. Fletcher VK

I don't use a mini fridge. I have a full-size one. Yes we are all mods. I'm sure the ones who didn't make the cut might even support this death trap you wish to construct. I do not as I do not wish for you or others to die. I also cannot guarantee that this Frankenstein of a vehicle would not be driven near my 4 kids, placing them in the danger zone. An Intrepid was never made to hold more than a 4 door sedan was made to hold. Trying to make a round peg fit a square hole is idiocy. I'm not rich either. I drive a 1990 Bronco with holes rusted through it. But if I wanted a pickup I would find a cheap pickup, not try to carve my woman's Camry into something it isn't and act butt-hurt when someone points out to me that I am a retard. By the way, if I did try to do that I most certainly would qualify as a retard. Don't worry, the short bus factory workers are glad they have jobs still. Keep up the good work, and please do not drive anything you have "created" in the proximity of those I care for and hold dear. Or even Hammer Time for that matter.

FletcherVK: Serious note on this. NO. You'll end up without either a car or a "thing" to use like a truck if you cut up an Intrepid. It's unit body needs to be as designed - there is no frame on it the body is the frame. Yes - Moderators are most likely to respond to posts and we do have a sense of humor. Money back if not satisfied. Money short for a real truck. That was apparent and why I suggested a trailer if this car is any good at all now that's the cheapest way out but need a place to put the trailer when not in use if an issue. Altering a car (most) such as anything like you mentioned isn't practical for about any and definitely not unit body vehicles without extensive thought and work exceeding just getting the vehicle you need not this one, Tom
