light 4 inch surface rust near fenders Sign In

2003 Hyundai Sonata - I use a little rubbing compound and it comes off but then comes back after a little while. I have a cheap body guy - will cost $250 but I want to delay... Auto zone said I could use a clear auto spray paint after the rubbing compound then sand a little to blend it in. They said air exposure is making the rust come back. I could section the area I want to work on in with masking tape which has not left marks in the past as long as its not on too long. Keep in mind, this is not a brand new mint car so I'm not interested in perfection or a professional body man job, just make it look it a little better and save a little $. No rust with clear paint over it sounds good to me esp. when it prolongs the rust from coming back and buys me time on the body work. Does this makes sense? Is there a better way? What about the sanding afterwards - sanding seems to have always ruined my paint jobs in the past. Thanks for the help and remember I'm not an expert.

Exposed metal is going to rust. Rust is like cancer, if you don't get all of it then it comes back to devour everything.

You will need to sand it down to bare steel and treat it with a rust transformer to get any rust down in the grain of the steel. Then apply primer over top. A lot of parts stores have spray cans from a brand called DupliColor and they can get the same color paint your car came with if you can give them the pain code. Its usually on a sticker in the door jamb somewhere. Otherwise if you call a dealership with the last 8 digits of the VIN they might be able to look up what paint code this originally had. Another option is to go to a body supply store. They can use a photo gun on your paint to not only see exactly what kind of shade it is but also will match how much it has faded since new. Some will even put it into a spray can for you so that you don't need a paint gun. After the color is on you will want to spray some clear coat on it and then wax the whole car To help seal it up and make it look nicer.

With some attention to detail on sanding between coats, I've seen some passable spray can jobs. Search YouTube and you are going to find a ton of vids about how to do this. Beware of hacks showing garbage work. You'll just have a terrible result. Take a little time and try it out. Like you said, you aren't worried about it being perfect but just want it to be a little nicer. It can be done.

Thanks man, I thought of that option and actually tried it on a small area on the back fender. I'm not a body guy. It was a disaster. the sanding came out awful. Then with the taping off the section then spray painting, you could see the lines, it was really bad. The OEM pain is really expensive. Yeah, there's no way I would go near this option even though I understand your point that its the correct and best way to do it if I was good at this kind of thing...Like I said the option is just to buy time not solve the rust issue.

Unless you have clear panel separations to tape off, it will look even worse. That will have to be blended. No good can come of you trying to do this yourself.

Yes, something that divides the panel like a seam, a stripe or a moulding to make a clear separation so the break can't be seen.
