looking for a rough estimate Sign In

I was being an idiot and seeing how close I could get to my buddy's car. Turns out I got pretty close. I just would like a repair estimate if I were to take it to a shop. I am trying to avoid using insurance as im sure you all understand why.

Horizontal damage caused to the driver side rear door And rear fender. Paint damage and slight denting. along the door I would say the deepest point is 1/4 inch or less. And the fender is 1/2 inch or less.

Near impossible to quote damage this way and not an appraiser of auto body work but have a clue. You want a guess it could be between $500 and $1,500 bucks depending on HOW YOU BUDDY would like it fixed! New door not fixed up?

I understand avoiding insurance as "at fault" on your part would highly likely up your rates but should be free fix for your buddy.

If a car is less than a year old where I am you can insist on new not repaired + cost of installation and painting could be wild for rear quarter depending on how it's welded in.

You can get real estimates for a cash job but it should be with your buddy's approval of the way it gets fixed and understood. Frequently the new paint and or repaired area will be first to show up with some issue if only color doesn't stay matching perfectly in a couple years or so. Your call and a shop in person. No other way to really estimate body damage unless so excessive it's obvious vehicle is a total loss,

My buddy doesnt even care. Its his parents. I would rather get an estimate and give him the cash. He can decide what to do with it from there.

Thanks for the input though. Thats about what I came up with, through research. Sometimes forums give you some sort of insight.

Yikes - it's not even your buddy's car! Shouldn't you really fess up and see what the parent's/owners would like instead of making this a total catastrophe never mind the exact cost?

I have already told them. Im not trying to go behind their backs. They just want to use insurance for such minor damage. Ive got the money for it, so I am doing all I can to avoid messing with my insurance.

Quote from last post ">>They just want to use insurance for such minor damage.<<"

I think YOU HAVE LOST YOUR CHOICE OF HOW OWNER WANT'S THIS FIXED! For all I know they are so fussy about a certain shop or way to have it the best possible fix let your insurance handle it. Car could be out of service for some time if only for things to dry in steps so a rental car expense could get involved too.

I suspect you didn't mean it and it's an accident. At this point I can only say let the "parents/owners" decide what THEY want done and how with what your insurance will allow.

Gets worse sport. If I was looking at that car vs one right beside it same everything I would discount the value of the car that had any body work done over one that didn't no matter how good it might look you can tell. It's minor to most but not to some and if noticed when a trade or sale of that happens can impact the car's real value!

Lesson learned. Accidents happen no matter what you do.

I say let owners decide the approach. You can still pay (lots of phone work with insurance) for the cost that satisfies the rightful owners in line with insurance limits,
