03 Corolla - All breaks get lock up and wont release Sign In

2003 Toyota Corolla LE ~125,000 miles.

So recently my car has been acting up and I notice after driving for a bit that my car wont inch forward naturally when in drive. This appears to be because my breaks are not completely releasing. The break pedal seems to be acting normal though.

While stuck in heavy traffic the other day, I had to keep breaking on the freeway as I was stuck behind cars and eventually I noticed the breaks really were not releasing any more. I was at the point that to even accelerate a little bit I had to push my gas pedal to the floor. My engine was going strong but it could not overpower the breaks that refused to release.

I had to pull off to the side of the road and I couldn't even make it all the way to the side because I got to the point where my car could not even move an inch when I slammed the gas pedal to the floor. When I did this I started to smell a gross burning type of smell too, which was probably my breaks as my tires were not even spinning from what I could tell.

I got towed off and ended up at a mechanic who says everything seems to be normal and he can't figure out why the breaks are locking up. It appears that in longer drives or drives that require a lot of breaking will eventually continue to lock up my breaks. Where should I be looking for a problem? Calipers? Breaks? Rotors? Or somewhere else all together.

If all four wheels are locking up, remove the brake booster check valve with the wheels locked up and see if they release. Removing the check valve will release the vacuum in the booster.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks for the response. I got an e-mail from the mechanic saying "The front break rotors are warped, the right side break hose is twisted and incorrectly installed." Is it likely or possible that either of these issues is related to my breaks not releasing after driving for a while?

OK - If mechanic has it now he/she should find it. Yes - if a brake hose gets twisted (not by them selves) in doing work on it that wheel could easily lock up tight. You might be surprised that ONE locked solid wheel can feel like all and not move especially a drive wheel. If that was one rear it would probably drag it.

The first problem is why did that happen? It would have smoked that brake and they should be done in pairs. At the extreme would do all of it, calpers, rotors, pads, hardware and new hoses for fronts.

Tech should know if a rear or other is involved at all. DS's test would prove common to all, I'm just saying one drive of the two of this would feel like more than you might think,

Thank you for the response. I plan on going back to the mechanic today and driving the car around his business until I can get it to act up. He says he can not duplicate the problem but in the past I have been experiencing this problem quite a bit, this is just the first time it has completely prevented me from driving the vehicle rather than just being minor resistance when I apply gas.

Update: I drove the car around today circling the mechanics shop and got the car to have mild issues again. Turns out it is the front passengers side wheel that is not spinning when the car is jacked up and the problem is present. The front passenger wheel also happens to be the wheel that has the twisted hose.
It sounds like all should be fixed up by tomorrow. Thanks again for your input, I really appreciate that you would take the time to help me through this.

Thank you!

OK - No surprise here then. If the mechanic untwisted the hose and it freed up it might or even probably wouldn't act up right away. It appears it was able to lock solid meaning allow braking pressure in and not out then wheel gets hot, fluid inside caliper gets hot too and brakes apply themselves even harder to rock solid.

This is FWD only. If one is locked as they are both and the only drive wheels you are stuck and really don't know if it all or one as said earlier.

The fix is toss all of it now as they've been that hot and who knows what else lurks now? Hot brake fluid may have burned, rotor would warp, pads ruined, rubber parts at least harmed on that side but more prudent to do both so they behave equally for the life of the front brakes. TECH should know that and just untwisting a hose found that way if not right away when doing it you risk it doing it again or even blow out now.

Those are pressure flex hoses that hold very high pressure and allow wheels to move up/down and steer as well so subject to troubles anyway but twisted or left hanging even while working on brakes or just having them out of the way is a no go and they get wrecked - maybe much later than when harmed or those hoses can just do that for no reason but you have the reason.

If same tech did that he/she probably doesn't want to admit the mistake yet he found it. Now IMO and if recent the problem belongs to the person who did that as a human mistake that wasn't noticed when caliper was removed. If unknown YOU need ask to fix this up properly at a minimum both front brake hoses and bleed out the brakes of overheated fluid and test.

Sorry for the novel on it. They don't get twisted by chance it was put back together wrong. Not blaming anyone but it's not to be ignored now by YOU know that you know it ask for the fix or if you know a real tech that did that bet they'd be happy to correct that on their own time and can negotiate parts or not but it must be fixed and it's not,
