My brakes have recently started grinding (because I procrastinate too much), they're the original brakes and the car has 115,000km. I called the Chevy dealership for an estimate and they said $700 for the front and $750 for the back. I laughed and told her to have a nice day. I can get all new rotors and pads for $300 from the parts store and do it myself, and save $1100! I'm going to buy them soon, but they asked me if the brakes are manual or power, and I am having a difficult time trying to find that information out. So how can I tell?

Really?
If you have to ask that question, you really shouldn't be working on brakes.

Brake systems are not a place for beginners to learn how to work on cars. Don't be surprised if when you are all finished you end up having to pay a shop to do it all over again because you bought the wrong type of brakes or used the wrong technique installing them.

$ in Canada? You said km for miles on it is usually there for this car. I'm near Canada thought or I do put the "$" sign after the # or write CN after it can matter what the day's exchange is lots of countries use the "dollar" sport.
Anyway - same as HT just suggested if you had to ask that it isn't for you from the get go. Why do you think you are stuck with a "Chev. Dealer?"

Plenty of independents would do a fine job by nature a new car dealer would be higher. Your call where you go for all you know they don't all need doing or it's worse than just the parts you mentioned?

i have no idea what they meant, although having said that more than likely on your Malibu you have "through caliper parking brakes" on your back rotors. you will need a special tool to turn your back caliper piston in, can not use the old C clamp trick....on the front you can just not the back. and the linkage for the through caliper can get corroded and freeze up, just need to disassemble and clean. if you are going to DIY you can do the whole thing for a lot less. I have bought $20 rotors and fairly good ceramic pads for around $75 an axle for pads and rotors from RockAuto, the rotors are just as good as any i have ever had.
