1993 Grand Am 3.3L. When the motor warms up, the ABS light always comes on and stays on until the motor is allowed to fully cool down. No trouble codes. Anyone know what would cause this?

It has trouble codes. You're just using the wrong equipment. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Might be tough finding a code reader for that. In the meantime look and blow out and junk at wheels, 1/2 shafts and probably drum rears can pick up junk in magnetic pick ups. DON'T BREATHE THAT DIRT! No clue why engine temp would be related to that if that at all, T

Also make sure the battery tests good and the connections are clean and tight. Have the charging system checked out. That would be a good starting point before digging deeper into the ABS system. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I don't believe this vehicle has ABS codes. It only has a 4-pin ALDL connector > A, B, F, M. Already cleaned out the wheels at the self-wash place. Battery and alternator are new. My theory: a sensor is going bad and the engine heat slightly effects how the wires between the sensor and module conduct which, added to the effect of a poorly working sensor, causes the ABS light to turn on when the wires near the module (over the motor) are heated up.

1993 - codes will be marginal at best. A look/see of connections and conditions may be your friend. Fuse to ABS should show continuity and voltage at both sides. Multi wire connections - just in case disconnect neg on battery and take a look. Note: New parts doesn't mean they are good in fact lately they scare me! T

Should have said the original white grease for connections for wiring plugs all over on a 20 year old car is junk. It can turn to a pie crust Betty Crocker would not approve of. That a joke but it happens is not! T

Believe us, it does store ABS trouble codes in the EBCM. You can only get to it with an enhanced scan tool, Tech 1, Tech 1A, or Tech 2. There are no flash code ABS diagnostics. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Yes it will DS, my own for the year I don't trust so much but can with paper book that tells what code means where to check. OP - disconnecting battery will erase codes and memory - hard codes comes right back. Idle speed could be compromised for a while and stalling could happen that alone should go away in some time - arrgghh! Loved my own 63 Falcon, rolled the sucker over and sill drove it home! T

I appreciate the info and the code list. So where can I rent or otherwise access an enhanced scan tool, Tech 1, Tech 1A, or Tech 2? I live in SE Michigan.

Not sure about who rents out scan tools like those where you live, but you could call around some repair shops in your area to see if they have the tool that can scan the EBCM for you. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

No regulars known close to SE MI. Just look for visual problems for now. If you get down to needing code(s) ask around by phone in person or whatever, T

OK, check this out. While the motor was cold (and the ABS light not staying on) I disconnected 1 then both of the front ABS sensors expecting the ABS lamp to light. I started the motor, put it in drive, let the wheels turn, hit the brake. Nothing. Why wouldn't this condition send an ABS warning??

The ABS warning might take starting the car and running like other lights can and are just bulb check mode and I can't speak for every make and model of everything but that would be common to GM anything I ever knew of. Hey - anything brakes needs your attention. The default mode is regular braking. If you rely on this thing thinking how to stop by itself you could be surprised. Light on means ABS should be OFF. It's up to you to be safe not this or any web site, T

My bad. Apparently the car is smarter than I thought it was. When I tried it before with a disconnected sensor it was on the jack. When I actually drove it with the front left sensor disconnected, the light popped on within 100 feet. Ok, so the ABS warning system works. The original problem still remains, however, where the ABS light comes on and stays on after the motor warms up.

I don't understand why your making it difficult. If you get it scanned, you'll know why the ABS computer is turning the light on. Then you'll know where to look for the problem. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Old car. I'd rather fix it myself if at all possible.
