Added water to brake fluid compartment Sign In

Hi,
I was topping up my water tank when I accidentally added water to my brake fluid reservoir. As it was full anyway, it pooled on top, and I realised what I had done and sucked it out immediately. I only added about a shot of water and it was there for only seconds before being sucked out. Is my car safe to drive though?

Thanks.

No, you need to use a turkey baster and suck as much brake fluid as you can out. Brake fluid is hydroscopic which means it absorbs moisture like a sponge. In reality, you should be flushing the whole system with fresh fluid from an unopened can.

That shouldn't ruin parts but needs to be instantly flushed out with pure new brake fluid.

The property you lose is the boiling point with just a fraction of water the DOT 3 (400+ F) most common is lost - get it out now. 1% is too much!
