Hello, everyone.

I leased a 2021 Hyundai Elantra in April of 2021. As of this writing, it only has 6,820 miles on it. I’m very happy with it.

But I do have a question.

The car starts via push button, not a key. In order to start the car, you have to tap lightly on the brake pedal, then push the start button.

About two weeks ago, when I tried tapping the brake pedal to start the car, the brake pedal was stiff. In other words, the pedal resisted. It never did before.

When I pressed the start button, the brake pedal became normal.

If I stop the car for a short period of time, then try starting it up again, the brake pedal has no resistance. The pedal resists only after the car has been sitting a while.

I experience NO problems with the car whatsoever, once I start it. The brakes work fine. I do not see any warning lights or indicators at all. I see no warnings about the brakes, nothing whatsoever that indicates there is something wrong.

Somebody I know told me it might be a vacuum assist issue, but I want to know if this is something serious that I should be concerned about, or if it’s a minor issue. I do plan on taking the car to the dealer to have it looked at, but I’ve been so busy at work, I haven’t had time.

Can the issue be diagnosed just from what I’ve said? If it is, indeed, the vacuum assist, is it serious? Can it be something else?

Thank you for any assistance you care to give.

I tend to agree with that. It sounds like the stored vacuum in the booster is leaking down while it is parked.

This isn't a big deal at this point as everything works normal when the engine is started. This will happen to any car if the brake pedal is pushed more than once before starting the engine.

Thank you very much for your response and assistance. I do plan on having the system checked, but it is reassuring to hear it's not a serious problem. Thank you again.

Closing this question now.
