Front Break Spindle Bearing Adjustment Sign In

I have been studying my manual regarding my truck before doing a front end break job try to always do this before doing repairs. This is a 1976 Chevrolet and front spindle bearing adjustment the manual calls for and I quote (Tighten the nut slightly(no more 12 ft-lbs of torque) then back off till loose, no more this is in the manual. My question is I've done front breaks before but to my memory torque applied to the nut was more than 12 ft-lbs. Is this correct has me concerned this is in Haynes manual as well as Chiltons soft back. Hopefully I explained myself and my question is understood clearly.

Thankyou;

Re: Front Break Spindle Bearing Adjustment Sign In

This is hard to put to exacting specs to describe how tight to do this and they left out while turning rotor or you did.

Tighten hard by just hand only force by like channel lock pliers. Much harder than just that if new bearings, turn and then back off to next spot a cotter pin will go thru castle nut and hole thru spindle.

Hey - how if you did get the inner grease seal out? I ask because pretty much why touch this if not servicing these type bearings and doesn't sound like you have.

This even old style or not is not a good place for learning the hard way.

Have to suggest you get pro, hands on help to learn how to set bearings that are not sealed or don't mess with them or brakes at all,

Re: Front Break Spindle Bearing Adjustment Sign In

This is a critical adjustment. The only reason for the initial tightening is to set the bearings in position. In the end, you only want to remove all play and have a very slight preload on the bearing. Too tight and it will quickly burn out the bearing.

Your correct about the bearing adjustment I was really just wanting to see if the book was correct my memory of bearing adjustment and preload was 24 ft-lbs then back off and go back snug lining up the cotton pin least that was the way I was taught in shop class. Your all a big help in jogging memory of info might of forgot.

How much you tighten it is not important as long as you back it off to the right tension. All you are doing is setting the bearing into place before adjusting it.
