Hi,
Recently purchased a used 2012 Elantra from a dealer, in as is condition. I was made aware that it did need brakes.
I had new pads, rotors, & wheel bearings installed by professional mechanic. After a few minutes of driving at moderate speeds, brakes grind when a firm braking is applied, just before the stop. We are now clueless. The grind does not happen in reverse nor does it happen when it is raining. The mechanic did try a different pad, to no avail.
After researching, I found other 2012 & 13 Elantra owners have experienced the same and some owners with new Elantras have even returned to the dealership under warranty, never finding a resolution.
Any ideas?

Could be an ABS event taking place. Maybe a wheel speed sensor is rust jacked cause a weak signal at slower speed causing the ABS controller to trigger an ABS event?

Thanks for the reply Discrete. That's a thought. I looked to see if I could disconnect the ABS but there are 3 fuses, abs 1, 2 & 3. I can remove 2 & 3 but abs 1 is included in a multifuse, So since I cannot remove the multifuse I am not sure if by removing 2 & 3 the abs will be fully disconnected.

Anything that puts the ABS light on shuts the system down.

Disconnected ABS, same problem.

We've come to the conclusion that since there is no noise when it's wet outside or after the wheels had a chance to cool down, that the pads are becoming excessively hot, causing the noise... Any ideas?

I've seen this happen with WRONG wheels! With the pads/rotors new the body of a caliper can set farther towards part of the wheel it wouldn't hit it not for new thick pads and rotors - was once customer wanted different wheel trim and swapped wheels with the same car/vehicle just happened to have very slight different "dishing" depth dimensions/clearance for them to be new?
That would be seen as marks of rubbing on both caliper and inside the wheel if so. One I dealt with was so obvious (bought used wheels swapped by request) was fine with used brakes not new by me locked solid just putting wheels back on this one may just be able to rub upon a "firm" stop. You would see the evidence or they should since this really is up to who did it to figure out if wrong wheels figure out a solution if in fact wheels and OE check recalls or may need new wheels?
Said - happened just the once glad it was so obvious that time - wrong wheels right brakes in that case...the way they were made just off not the way wheels worked otherwise,

(Edit) Change was from alloy to steel wheel - swapped just millimeters different mattered!

You could take a temp reading of the brakes when the problem is happening and when it isn't happening to see if that is a possibility. Usually when brakes get really hot they fade and you might notice brake pull.
An improperly finished rotor can cause a grinding or humming noise during breaking also.
Did this problem start right after the brake service?

An improperly finished rotor can cause a grinding or humming noise during breaking also.
Did this problem start right after the brake service?
Well there is no pulling. We bought the car used from a dealer, as is. We were told it would need front brakes. We heard grinding from the get go and assumed it just needed brakes. Changed the brakes, noise still there, replaced rotors, noise still there, replaced wheel bearing, noise still there, tried different composition pads, noise still there... Mechanic is going to check temp and also take measurements. Thanks for your input...
