Need brake help ASAP Sign In

I have a 2001 Hyundai tiburon and about a month ago the brakes locked up on me. Thought it was calipers, but was told by a mechanic they we're fine. He said it was either the master cylinder or the brake booster. I replaced both of those today and still have the same problem, it does work slightly better but not by much..and yes I bled the master cylinder and all 4 brake calipers twice. Am I missing something? Or could it be something else? Also, after I switched out the brake booster and master cylinder, my brake light came home, the one with the little exclamation mark in a circle and one with a o in the circle. So idk what's going on. I've gotta fix this asap.

When the wheels are locked up, does loosening the brake lines on the master cylinder free them up?

You have to do that with the wheels off the ground of course.

Yep. Until I drive it again. I can cut the car off and pump the brakes back up and then crank the engine and the pedal goes back down. Without going back through the bleeder valves.

I'm confused on your response.

If you have the wheels off the ground and you can't spin them, you can loosen the brake lines on the master cylinder and that will free the wheels up?

If that is the case, when they are locked up, turn off the engine and remove the brake booster vacuum line from the power brake booster. That will let the vacuum go away that is stored inside the booster. See if relieving the vacuum causes your brakes to free up. Let us know what you find out.

anything done before this started happening - anything might be a clue, maybe new pads, add fluid, new wheels, deep water, maybe you tow, have you scanned for ABS codes,

Didn't get a chance to take the hose off today it was already dark when I got off work. But the brake pedal doesn't stay locked up. I drive it, then after a mile or so the brake pedal gets harder and harder and the calipers grab more and more. But when I cut the car off the pedal is softer again and I can pump em up till it's hard, then crank the car back up and they go back down. So IMO the brake booster is fine. I read somewhere to check the vacuum valve on the hose, but my hose doesn't seem to have one? Before I replaced the booster my brakes were totally locked up and the pedal wasn't moving. The brake light wasn't on before, but now that I replaced the booster and master cylinder the brake light is on, one with a circle with the exclamation mark the other is the circle with the "p" inside. I've never used my parking brake or anything like that. I have no idea where to go from here.

You need to try some of the things suggested or this isn't going anywhere.
It has all the symptoms of brake fluid NOT returning to master cylinder which it wouldn't if it lost adjustment, bent, mis-installed or who knows yet?
Brake fluid warms up, expands and they apply themselves without you touching a thing. Usually from wrong parts or damage. Could even be a dragging parking brake you said you don't use but have had another look at it and may have?
A reason it move again later is brake fluid cooled down and they release and problem starts all over again.
Up top you said you need this fixed ASAP, no time to check what has been suggested so perhaps you should send the job out now as it can't be safe to drive and probably wrecking more brake parts dragging like that if not already it will.
Send the job out, you have no time as YOU said and need it fixed right away,

Its not that I don't have the time, it's that I have no light to work on it. Kinda hard to work in the dark. And no one else has driven it except me. And I'm not driving it other than around the block after I've tried something so I can see if it's fixed the problem if it's not returning the fluid, does that mean the master cylinder could still be the problem? imma work on it this weekend and whenever I can have light to see.

First - an appropriate place to work is up to you or take it to a place you can if you must or can't light up where you are.
Apparently the mechanic you consulted never touched the vehicle just guesses of two items and you replaced both now begs the question with what? New or with what? Light came on so you did something wrong.


Choice of words matters and you were asked first reply by DS - do all lock up? Just saying "lock up" suggests to me or most either wheels skidded or perhaps brakes just stayed applied. That first notice was now a month ago so you said.


Whatever the issue if this is dragging one or more brakes while driving you would feel heat at that wheel or all. You may be surprised that just two brakes on hard especially but not necessarily drive wheels only a vehicle won't move on its own.

I can guess as well as anyone so will try once more: If fluid can't return to master cylinder brakes when driven will drag up to full braking power for one or more wheels which isn't known so let the guessing begin again.


Since two master cylinders didn't solve it, it probably wasn't that or the booster at all. That leaves to me it's not all wheels which you don't know how to tell? OK - it might share one flex, rubber hose to rear and one flex hose each to front - look as I'm not going to. Those can lock pressure in calipers, get warm and that wheel or wheels if sharing one would apply themselves as fluid gets hot and work again when it cools down. If this didn't misbehave with this complaint as a tech I would look at each brake for evidence of it being too hot or uneven wear at each wheel up to if I could make it happen just crack open a line as already suggested with no answers from you to see if it released. If fluid is in fact unable to return for any reason that point on toward brakes involved would or could lock up and instantly release which would target the real problem.


You need to be ready and fast to do and check it while active or look for evidence at each wheel. I also think you've confused the problem more by not knowing how to bleed these brakes - a guess and also can't have all four wheels up at the same time fast if at all.


Does parking brake work even if you don't use it it's involved?

The obvious and final guesses: You don't have a place to work on this nor the correct equipment to do it and want to save some $$ doing it yourself. No surprise, people like to save some $$ but seems you just wasted just that on a master cylinder and brake booster it didn't necessarily need so making no headway saving money.




Just FYI and I did just go look you should have parking brake mechanism inside rear calipers on this. Appears engaged by cable to bracket shown here in pic at the bottom,

If either or both of those are even partly engaged you would both get a warning light on dash and heat up those calipers and the fluid and have the problem you are having.


One more question you seem not to answer ---- is the main cable to rear parking brake free and returned to full off or either of the ones to each rear caliper? If not snug from retracting that is now problem #1 to fix and easy to mess those up so beware,
