Occasional Grinding/Scraping Sound when Braking

Hello all. I came across this forum whist doing a google search, and thought I'd pop in for some advice. 2008 Toyota Yaris 165,000 km The car has been making a loud grinding or scraping sound when braking, but only every once and a while. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when it happens, though it seems to happen after the car has been out for some time. The sound seems to come from the passenger side, and only when braking. (And only occasionally). Since discovering the noise, a friend has replaced the pads and the caliper on the passenger side. He says the routers appear to be in quite good shape. The car seemed to have been fixed and a friend took it for a long road trip this past weekend and reported no problems. My wife and I carpool. I drove the car to work this morning and heard nothing. However, my wife called upon her arrival at work and said the brakes were still making the grinding/braking noise, and it was as loud as before replacing the pads/caliper. The sound seems more likely to happen when coming to a sudden stop at slower speed rather than easing or slowing from high speeds. Other than the noise, brake function seems perfectly normal. Any ideas?

Fair enough, and understood. The person who replaced the brake parts has a fair bit of experience in this regard, and has done several brake jobs for others without an issue. He has likely done more than what I've stated, but those are the details I recall off the top of my head. Apologies, I'm not a "car guy". As it happens, we'll be taking in to a mechanic this week. Was more trying to get a guage on what I'm in for in terms of cost, etc., and was curious about the intermittent nature of the problem.

The person who replaced the brake parts has a fair bit of experience in this regard, He would never have replaced only one side if that were the case. Nobody in this business would ever do that. Again, I may have misunderstood - he may well have replaced both sides. As it stands, we'll be taking it to a shop in the near future. Any ideas on the original problem?

That has to be inspected. An experienced guy will know what to look for. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
