Proton brake caliper removal problems
Hi there, I am currently working on the brakes of my Proton persona coupe (AKA, proton putra) 1.8, 2001 reg. This car had been standing for about 5 years until the project began a few weeks ago! I have successfully refurbed the front calipers - new seals, rust treatment and paint - but now I am tackling the rear disk brakes which shouldn't be too difficult however I am having problems removing the caliper. The lower of the 2 sliding pin bolts can be removed easily as it has a bolt head (12mm) but the upper one does not have a bolt head.. It does have a plug/ rubber nipple in the center, which when trying to remove on the rear left broke off.. So, i am unsure whether this has anything to do with the removal..? I have attached some pictures which I hope help to picture what i'm talking about :) Additional information: As I understand these brakes are part number CA1405 Brake Caliper They are branded with the mitsibushi symbol, hence are used on various Mitsibushi cars such as some FTO models, mirage, I will attach a picture with all of the cars which use these brakes! Thank you so much for any help, I have been searching the internet for days trying to find information on it!! Not to sure how the pictures work on this site as i'm new, so i'll post the url here: http://autoforums.carjunky.com/photos/pic/283q1HCm/1062.jpg http://autoforums.carjunky.com/photos/pic/283q1HCm/1063.jpg http://autoforums.carjunky.com/photos/pic/283q1HCm/1064.jpg http://autoforums.carjunky.com/photos/pic/283q1HCm/1065.jpg

Pics can be different to make post here. First - I don't think I know this car at all this being a US mostly site. No problem as I think you said the buzz word for why confused. The one with just one 12mm bolt probably swings with that removed then the caliper or bracket whichever is fight with you should slide OUT. Just a bit rusty there in just first picture noted. Watch out and do everything not to round off bolts or worse break them or lines if at all possible. Lube stuff properly with proper brake grease such that it will NOT freeze up later. Some caliper mounted bolts from factory use thread locker. I've never found that lock so tight a bolt doesn't remove just sticky so it can't just fall out. At least leave those properly tight. Tricks: If a bolt real sticky and can't use air tools put a correct 6 point closed end wrench on that one and strike wrench with a rubber hammer - sounds nuts but works! Good luck, T

Yes, the bottom bolt is removed the the top one acts as a hinge to access the pads or the caliper can be slid right off that pin once it clears the pads. If there is no room to lift the caliper high enough to slid it off, the remove the whole bracket and then slide it off. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the reply. As I/we suspected that idea is used on assorted models - just saves the extra bolt and works just as well. Do lube this stuff and check the frail dust/moisture seal as if one freezes up it's a real pest, Will close out thread as solved. YOU may ask any moderator to re-open it upon request, T
