Rumbling sound & feel breaking @ greater than 35mph Sign In

2003 Hyundai Sonata Base - 4 cylinder - 2L - 120k miles - I've owned it for one year - bought it from my mechanic for $2500. I trust him have - known & done business with him for several years. He checked it out before I bought it - only minor problems so far.

Sorry for not providing an accurate description. I lived in New York City for 20 years and did not own a car. I got around on foot, subway or taxi. My car knowledge is limited.

I've noticed when I'm on the highway and I brake, I hear and feel a rumbling sound when I brake. My first thought in trying to describe it is it sounds like putting a paper folder on a running home fan's blades. The sound seems to be coming from the front.
My car doesn't brake smoothly and quickly. I actually worry when I'm in the fast lane and have to brake quickly - the rumbling feel and sound gets greater when I have to slow down in a shorter distance when traveling at a higher rate of speed.
The sound gets a little louder and the braking takes a little longer - the brake pedal is not sinking to the floor and over all the braking is OK, especially at lower speeds so I haven't felt the need to rush the car into the shop. Also, I don't travel on the highway often.

I'll probably take it in shortly to be safe, but I'm curious what the forum thinks:
- What's your first guess on what the issue may be?
- Does this look to be serious?
- Does it sound like an expensive repair bill?

I'm checking first so I can prepare financially before I take it in. I appreciate your feedback Dee.

You need to get the car inspected before anything. We can't know what your problem is with no information.

Dee - Seems like you have severely worn out brakes which right now would still be routine brake job work.

Even when the friction material is gone or some can fall off with just age not miles or the use it's treated the same. You do a brake job.

Oddly, brakes can still work (not suggested at all!) when totally worn out but you risk failure or making the job more expensive.

Cost of this job will be dependent on exactly what is noted when fully inspected and apart IMO. BTW - I don't think this is anything to do with how the car was a year ago from your ''trusted'' mechanic.

In the future do ask for brake inspection with other routine service or even just tire rotations a tech gets a peek at them and can give you some advance warning that another round is coming. Lining falling off stuff you don't see so easily in advance.

Ask for quality parts, they are worth it and do cost a bit more,

T

Hammer Time is fast here. You really shouldn't drive the one with known symptoms as mentioned anymore till fixed. Lousy brakes (of course we can't be certain) could instantly be NO brakes without warning and you have a warning!

That's a good way to turn a $150 job into a $600 job and that's if it doesn't cause a fatal accident first.
