Torn rear dust boot on a 2007 Uplander Sign In

I changed all the rotors and pads on my 2007 Chevrolet Uplander today and tore one of the rear dust boots quite badly when I slipped with the pliers while pushing the piston back in. I have reassembled everything and I am going to order a rear caliper rebuild kit tomorrow for $12 because I can see it has a dust boot. I think I have to take the piston out to get the dust boot on. So how do I do this? The old dust boot is still in place but isn't protecting anything. I don't really want to rebuild the entire caliper as it has an integrated parking brake, I just want to get a new dust boot on there. Anyone have an idea how this might be done. Thanks

Wish I could say for sure but with integral parking brake I think you are in trouble. Torn boot plain will let moisture in so that's it for that caliper when it does.

Near always (the kits if rebuildable at all without more parts) an entire already rebuilt one is cheaper and you don't get stuck with needing tools you don't have. If you used pliers to turn a piston you don't have the tools apparently. IDK - you may have wrecked the piston?

You really should do brake parts in pairs meaning same to the other side.....

Don't even attempt to take that caliper apart. You will really regret it. Bite the bullet and buy a new caliper. You really should be buying 2 calipers but you'll probably get away with one.

The next time you get the idea to tackle a job that you don't have the knowledge nor equipment for, go take a nap instead.

Re: Torn rear dust boot on a 2007 Uplander Sign In

I don't want to take the caliper apart, I want to remove the piston to install a new dust boot. I am not sure I even have to do that, can I get a new dust boot on without removing the piston? If I can get the piston out without taking disconnecting the brake line that would be even better, I will just clamp the line to reduce brake fluid loss. It appears that I just have to turn the piston counter clockwise a little bit after it is fully extended. Has anyone done this repair? Does anyone actually have experience in removing the rear piston from the caliper? I appreciate any help. As I said, the dust boot is a couple of bucks, a reman caliper is +$100 bucks, that is a big difference. The brakes are working very well but I understand that the torn dust boot will lead to a seized caliper if I don't replace the dust boot. Thanks.

You have no idea what you are doing or how difficult this is to do.

No, you can't just pop the piston out and back in easily.

I gather from your reply that you have no idea how to do what I need to do? Thanks for responding but i was actually looking for answers from someone who had some clue about what to do. Has anyone actually removed the rear piston from a Chev caliper? Thanks.

I suggest you watch your mouth.

I'm giving you helpful advice. If you think you can do this, then you go right ahead. I guarantee you will ultimately ruin the caliper and be buying a new one but if you're going to be a smart ass you can figure that out yourself.

PS, I was rebuilding calipers before you knew how to drive a car.
