X5 parking brake light remains on while driving Sign In

2004
BMW
X5
3.0
130K

My parking brake light started turning on and off while driving a couple of weeks ago. This went on for a while and since a few days ago it does not turn off at all. Meaning, the red parking brake sign stays on/red after the brake is released and never turns off until the engine is shut.

Thanks in advance

Red warnings about universally mean DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR WITH ONE LIT!

Now I have to leave it to you as I think the light is just an icon not words saying parking brake and many are for either brake problems hydraulically for service brakes and same light for parking brake at least thinks it's still on - same warning.

If parking brake can't release for any reason despite releasing it inside it very well would be on and you could or are dragging brake.

That or perhaps low on fluid. If that and found low then you need to know why. I think most BMWs will warn of brake wear as another warning but it's time to verify what the warning means. Around me and other places you may be stuck for help with a BMW dealer for info and at least their parts for repair. Many of the few shops I deal with buy the software or specific equipment for some or all of the exotic cars (it's in that category) or specialize in it as independent shops.

Have to say stop driving it till you know exactly what the warning means by owner's manual,

If this is a brake pad warning light, it will specify "brake pads"

I think you are likely low on fluid which would mean it's time to have the wheels removed and the brakes inspected. The brake pad life will be listed in the computer by percentage and can be read with a professional scan tool.
