brake problem Sign In

Hi everyone, this is my friend's 2005 Siena it comes with ABS. when he was driving on the highway the brake pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor. and when we stop the car, it was stopping, and there is no any sort of external leaks. the Abs light was on for a while, could this be because of ABS internal problem or brake master cylinder, how can we isolate the cause if it is the ABS or the master cylinder. please help.

Your very first step is to read those ABS codes.

As far as testing whether it's the Master or ABS unit, that is very difficult. About the only way is to use plugs on the Master ports to test the master but even that is not totally reliable.

What we usually do is replace the Master first. I know we always preach not to throw parts at a problem but there aren't many other options here.

Re: brake problem Sign In

Sounds too basic but did you check the level of the brake fluid? Just me sometimes - all those thing that are supposed to warn you DON'T all work after so many years "fluid level" not a RED warning should say so in language - a guess look what manual says warning light should look like for the exact vehicle.
Same problem though - if it was ever low the problem start even when filled now you've travelling to the floor and a 50/50 shot to wreck the master cylinder if not the first reason can be next or constant now. Why - there's crust built up as it doesn't travel that far and now pushing 14 years that would tear up the seals inside. Happens way too much no from outside climate nobody makes a routine of change brake fluid - me too on my own! Shame!

Re: brake problem Sign In

thank you, the code for the ABS I have is the rear right abs sensor malfunction, I don't think this can cause the brake pedal to go to the floor, the brake fluid level is ok. I guess I have to replace both the ABS and master and see what happens do you think the bleeding is going to need a scan tool,

I wouldn't jump at replacing the ABS. It is far more likely to be the Master. You only replace the ABS if the Master doesn't resolve the issue.

If you do end up replacing the ABS, yes you would likely need a scan tool to bleed it internally.

Ditto - still would seriously consider just doing the master AND get it all bled out properly. Do just look at the dang sensor for crap all over it in fact all of them.
IDK - there just isn't a standard to go thru a vehicle to do stuff unless you have the problems first a lot you can ward off,

Re: brake problem Sign In

thank you for the help, I have one question I tried to check bleeding the abs brake, my scan tool says bleeding unsupported is because the scan tool is not good enough or the software in the ABS /ESU. is not allowing. the scan tool I have is OTC Genesis Evo 5.0.

Yes, this vehicle may not have that ability. Not all cars do.

I looked at Alldata and i see no reference to scan tool bleeding so it must be only manual.

Re: brake problem Sign In

thank you again, the master cylinder of this Siena is weird, there is a pump and master cylinder attached together, and it is very expensive, what do you suggest on how to replace the master cylinder.

Re: brake problem Sign In

Not much you can do about that. It is what it is.

Pricey or not, you still have to buy one.

If your van has stability control, it's not all that expensive. The dealer price is only $248. You should be able to get an aftermarket or even a reman a lot cheaper.

It's a little more expensive it it doesn't have stability.
