brakes making odd clicking/creaking noise

i swear my brakes on my 02 Ranger are cursed.
im almost positive the noise is solely coming from the front left wheel with light to moderate brake pressure. however im getting two different noises.
with the wheels pointed straight ahead while braking im getting a rythmic clicking noise. the best way to describe how it sounds is if you were to let two magnets attract to eachother and slam together.
the second noise happens with slow speed turns like into a driveway with light to moderate braking. along with the above mentioned clicking there is a loud creaking/moaning.
some side notes ive noticed when trying to replicate the problem - it tends to happen ones the brakes have heated up
- only does it while traveling foward. everything is quiet in reverse
- it doesnt matter which way the wheel is turned.
- suspension looks tight,(swaybar endlinks, ball joints, shocks)
ive popped the wheel off, everything was tight, i completely dissasembled, relubed and assembled. rotor looks fine
noise still there.

No rotor is perfect so the brake pads and calipers are made to move slightly where you lube and have assorted ways to control pad rattle. Even calipers can rattle but not while braking like this.
I've noted just what you are describing when a rotor has an outer ring of rust where the pad doesn't touch and a small chunk has flecked off or even with nothing seen can make the noise you just described. A or B - if so, turn the rotor or carefully tap the entire ring of loose rust off in and out. If it has that outer ring I'd bet on that being this problem. It happens in here with road rust quite a bit but doesn't usually cause noise. I take that rust off when I see it even doing something else for the car. This can happen even when brakes aren't otherwise worn out.....

dmac.....have you checked the wheel bearings? They don't have to be loose to be bad, and the brand of pads can make a difference too....just a thought.

ill have to try knocking the rust off the outer ring.
the truck sits in the driveway alot with the gas prices in NY lately.
this problem wasnt there one day and just appeared the next.
the wheel bearings did cross my mind with the creaking noise when the wheels are turned, the truck has 147,000 miles on it.

Ok: If the rust is what I think it will chip off fairly clean if you remove the caliper and tap DOWN with a hammer - not striking the contact/friction surface area of the rotor. Some brake pads will be very close to covering/touching the entire rotor surface and just a couple mm's different in brands matters. This problem is frequent when pads are replaced and rotors not touched or replaced which happens more than we all might think with brake jobs.
Bearings can make a click noise but more often a growl on turns. When a bearing is at fault it usually gets worse fast and no repacking if the packable type will help.
Of interest: I've seen MANY brand new - one year old leftover cars that immediately needed new rotors from sitting a whole year and not being driven. Dealers want to turn the rotors and I scream for customers to demand new rotors not resurface rotors for cars with 10-20 miles on them! Tough darts for the automaker that they can't make cars that don't rust even before they sell them!
