chevy malibu locked brakes
|
|
|
I have a 2006 chevy Malibu with about 170k miles. I bought the car about 7 months ago. I recently noticed that my brakes are locking up. not fully locked to where the car can't move but the car struggles to speed up and slows down quick. the car does not steer to one side when I brake. I noticed that all 4 tires get really hot when I'm having brake problems. there is no abs or check engine lights on. the problem is not consistent. I've noticed that it happens more often when it's hot out. I've changed the brake pads and rotors on the front and back. I was recommended by a shop to change the calipers on the front but I won't be doing this since the problem is with all 4 wheels. if anyone knows a fix to this frustrating problem please let me know! thanks 👌

You mean all four can drag and get noticeable hot still right? This would likely be a master cylinder problem or possible brake fluid contamination should be ruled in or out as the original cause which is a relative nightmare if so and very costly fix. If your new rotors and pads have been excessively hot again they too might have to go again depending on how hot they really got. Master cylinders almost never do this unless there was something done to cause that so concentrate on fluid is contaminated with an oil not brake fluid as the cause, T

If an oil did this you are REALLY screwed and VERY costly to get out of that. Rubber? Brake parts are rubber not a type tolerant of oils at all they swell up everywhere oil includes PS fluid, ATF or anything not rubber friendly!!!!! You would have ABS it ran thru and hit every hose, proportioning valve, all seals in calipers that touch fluid gone including the master cylinder, tank for it and its cap you might see now is swollen rubber? Look anyway. If swollen and going soft or doesn't fit right you are screwed IMO. Don't drive that car again you'll need full help and tons of bucks to get out of that to use it again at all - all that if that really happen could have been months ago just topping off brake fluid by you or a place that mixed them up. It does happen! Find out is now imperative and pick a plan. Your brake work just done might look all blue-ish and pads gone glazed are not trustworthy for long IMO - toss those too - heat ruins those if hot enough. Probably not but bearings could have been hot too so this bill really cranks way up there! Wheels if hot enough to melt any plastic parts were probably hot enough to cause damage I'm not even thinking of depending of type of wheels and trim unsure on them too. Hope not but you need to know, T

Are you really sure the brakes are dragging or are you just assuming that? Have you jacked the car up when this is happening and attempted to turn the wheels by hand? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yea I noticed the cap for the brake fluid was swollen and I switched it out. and how much would u say it would cost to change the valve? I was told by one of the shops that i could be the valve and it would not be cheap. they wanted to change the calipers first but u saved me 320 on calipers 👌. so basically I have to change the valve do a brake fluid flush change the rotors, pads, hose and calipers on al 4?

If you found the cap swollen, that confirms contamination and you are pretty much screwed. The ONLY way to fix this now is you have to replace every component that has rubber in it. That means the master, all calipers and wheel cylinders, all brake hoses and likely the ABS unit too. Then completely flush the system with fresh brake fluid. If you skimp out on any of this you will contaminate everything all over again and have to start over. This is a serious and expensive problem to get rid of.

Sheeeeet! Clues were strong for that. Said back several post - everything with rubber now has to go plus the damage from heat for driving it while dragging if that destroyed caliper brackets. This isn't funny and isn't going to be cheap for just all the parts. Flush? IMO would blow out totally metal only lines and flush thru brake fluid with lots of it with powerful air blasting that thru. Check what is legal for your area for ABS parts to send out or what. Not even sure of current rules where I am used brake parts are not legal to sell and even is so don't recommend that. As Hammer Time said if not all clear and done properly you are just going to be right back where you are now again so no skimping. Think hard on all the items and get some prices. Just curious now you know the problem but do you know how this could have possibly happened? T

I plan on changing the master, abs all 4 calipers the hose on all 4, the pads and rotors. in parts I think it's around 600 depending on where I buy them. and i was looking for the valve but I found no trace of it. followed the lines all the way to the calipers but found no trace of the valve. now that I think about it, i was having problems with the steering a couple months after I bought the car. I told one of my cousins and they said I was probably low on power steering fluid. they "topped me off" on power steering. didn't think about it much until I come to find out that the 2006 Malibu has electric power steering and he most likely put the power steering in the brake tank. Is mostely my fault for not noticing that he did this. could have been avoided but it's too late now.

OK - There's your reason as PS fluid should be a strong solvent, is an oil. Ha to $600 you haven't come close yet - betting a few grand! You've got ABS if some of those can't (IDK all costs) be redone sent out need to find out what you do I'm not sure if integrated with possible traction controls utilizing it - different types and makers - not always from GM maybe? You've obviously started with parts that touch brake fluid or what should have been now I can't know how this vehicle is pressure proportioned another item to balance pressure front to rear usually doubles as a warning light when an imbalance occurs for any reason. All will have tons of flare nuts to the items may or may not cooperate, twist up lines unknown for sure till you try. Sorry this happened. IDK what chances or luck this hasn't happened to anything on me to just totally redo a system hydraulically many items not common to ever fail without something like this. See what Hammer can come up with for possible configurations of this braking system and if different ones were used in same model and year I can't know. Whole point now is not to miss anything and any work + parts just wasted again, T

I don't think you have to be concerned with any valves here. This is most likely a diagonal system and most of them put the valves in the master now anyway. Your $600 figure sounds about right without the ABS unit. That alone could be $1000 easy. You can probably get away without that if you flush the system good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

that Malibu may have the rear brakes and ebrake together or a through brake. see if there is an "arm" on the back of the caliper . the ebrake can freeze in an on position. the only option is to replace the caliper this may have been caused by contamination or the car sitting in one place for a long time. you also have to screw out the piston and screw it back in, the special kit is best one of those " cubes" will not work. just noticed this was july probably long repaired.
