1999 Corolla LE
1.8L
no ABS
130k miles
I just replaced the rear shows, springs, cylinders, and drums on the above vehicle. The rear cylinder on the driver side keeps popping out, leaking fluid so bad the vehicle isn't drivable. I have put it back together twice, so it has happened three times. I can't even get it out of my driveway. The shoes are adjusted because I could barely get the drum on. Is it possible I did something wrong? Is it possible I got a defective part?

That's not really possible...
This style doesn't use pins in the w/cs, the shoes go right on them.....You may want to compare the new shoes to the old ones to make sure you have the right set......It's possible you damaged the seals in the w/c when it popped out the 1st time....That would give you a leak but the pistons aren't going to come out.....

The shoes looked the same when I moved the adjuster plates over. I'll double check tomorrow.

Yea something isn't right here....I'm trying to picture what could cause a piston to pop out with the shoes assembled and on this set up......there's nothing...
On the style that use w/c pins that go into the shoe, it's possible to get the pin in the cyl but miss the shoe and then a piston would pop out when fully assembled.
It might not be a bad idea to get a hold of a diagram and pull the right side apart as well and make sure everything is assembled correctly....

Unless of course, someone is stepping on the brake with the drum removed.

Now that I think about it, the new shoes weren't much thicker than the old ones. The old ones are at least 4 years old (15000 miles at least). I could barely tell the difference. The new ones are Wearever from Advance. The looked remanufactured. Does anyone think the manufacturer might have just cleaned up a core return really well and resold it?

The piston can't pop if the shoes are installed correctly. It just can't happen.

Your adjuster is maxed out. You need to measure the inside diameter of the drum. You may have gotten the wrong drum. It is also possible that you have the wrong wheel cylinder. There are two different cylinders for that vehicle depending if it has ABS or not. With ABS has a 3/4 inch pistons and non ABS has 11/16 inch pistons. Compare your old wheel cylinders, shoes, and drums to your old parts and see what is different.

As DS said the adjuster is maxed. Also the adjuster isn't in the slot of the primary shoe so that is going to extend the shoe even farther....It needs to go in that little square cutout of the shoe....With new shoes & a drum that is within specs, there is no way that adjuster should be that far out, maybe a quarter of as far as it is......at the most....
which leads to my next question......How the heck did you get that drum on??????.......I know......"It wasn't easy"
You better double check all your part #s to the vehicle info...

Just searched the web for different parts for this car and nothing showed EXCEPT anti-lock or not for just the wheel cylinders. That info can be all wrong.
This has to have the wrong parts on it even if boxed properly that can happen.
Do you have your old parts? Hope so or ask for yet another new bunch to match up.
As the guys said that adjuster is way too extended for new brakes and shouldn't be able to be that far out at all! IDK - unless it isn't in proper position that about can't happen? -- Tom
