I just had my 1989 4wd Jimmy s15 aligned. They said the only thing that needed adjustment was
the toe in. I set the camber myself and the tech said the camber was ok. I did not attempt to set the
toe in. I just ran the new tie rod ends down the same number of turns as the old ones I was replacing.
I just wanted every thing fairly close to how it should be so it would make it to the front end shop to
be aligned on a machine.
The front end has 4 new ball joints, idler arm, pitman arm upper control arms and tie rod ends. The tech
said all the new parts were installed exactly like they should be installed.
I put on some used wranglers with 70% of the tread left. That eliminated 95% the the out of balance I was
experiencing with the old wranglers it had one it. They were 10 years old and the truck had not been driven in
about 2 years. The new used ones are only 2 years old.
It still has a slight out of balance shake at 66-70 but it goes away at 71 mph. I never drive it over
65 so I am fine with that until I get new tires.
It still has a shudder problem when you push on the brakes at 70 mph. The shudder is bad and I
usually let off when they shudder and reapply them several times to slow the truck down. At speeds up to
50 there is no shudder.
My buddy has been a mechanic since 1969. He said it sounds like my front end needs new
calipers. They have 298,000 miles on the so I guess he may have identified what I need to
change out as I suspect they are worn out. They are $18 bucks apiece so I am thinking that
since the cost is fairly low they are a part I should consider replacing if they are causing or contributing
to my shudder problem.
Can anyone give me some pointers as to determine if the calipers are really bad? Is there some way
I can determine if the rotors are bad too. Thanks I want my wife to drive the truck some too and
I am sure if she ever hit the brakes coming off the freeway at 70 she would freak out.

only happens when braking- that sounds exactly like a brake ROTOR issue second guess would be a DRUM out of round issue... both very common more likely than a caliper problem... measurements can be taken, they can be cut and trued BUT might want to price new rotors in a time / hassle / age vs replacement cost.

The rotors are about $20 bucks a piece. I am not sure what they charge to turn them. I know its a lot
cheaper than buying new rotors.
Guess I can take the rotors down and see if they need to be turned. They should be able
to either fix the problem ,or tell me they are too bad to be trued, or tell me they are ok.
If they are ok or if they are turned and I still have the shake then I guess it is time to take
the rear drums down and see if they can be turned. The rear drums are are $20 bucks. I
don't believe they are the problem because the shudder is coming from the steering wheel.
You can see the hood shaking when it is shuddering. But who knows the rear end may be
shaking too. I just know the front end is shaking so the front end is where I will start.
If I find the drums and the rotors are ok and I still have the problem then I guess its time to
get some new calipers.

I have already ordered the rotors. I've already cointacted my friend the mechanic and he said I misunderstood him.
He also said I needed to get new rotors and I should get new ones not get the ones I got turned.
This should solve my problem. Thanks for you advice.
Unfortunately I usually hit the ball all over the table before I get it into the hole. You can close this if you want.
It will be a while before I get the new rotors.
