06 toyota matrix won't start a second time

So my car starts up fine when i run it, but if I run to the store real quick and start the engine again it won't start. so I would have to let the engine sit there for 10+ minutes before I can start the car again and this problem just started. not sure what is wrong, any idea on where to start looking for problems, I have looked at the fused by the engine but not the ones under the driver side. when i try to start the engine I just hear one click but the engine doesn't fire up.

have vehicle scanned for codes- its FREE at many part stores - copy and post the codes here someone will advise.
tell us - is there a remote starter?
Some easy things to check:
Try starting in N - or shaking shifter before start.
Check all battery cables + and - tight secure corrosion free.
How is your Elec skills - using wiring diagrams and test light or DVOM?

ok, ill go and see if I can get it check at a local parts store. would checker or o' Reilly do them for free?
I try starting in N first but i did try to shake the shifter.
I check the battery, there isn't any corrosion that I could see as it is not rusted but I'll look at the batter again.
my electric skills aren't that great or good, I don't really mess around with cars too much.

Quick note: "Cables 'LOOK' corrosion free. NOT conclusive at all. Kev2 said to know it. Try this. First twist carefully on the u-bolts then if they do tighten the nuts and use something like a e WD-40 on them. Schedule them to be really cleaned up and checked. They just don't last that well looking good or not now 11 years or so if you didn't constantly tend to them almost none are dependable, T

So I checked the battery and there is no corrosion on the connection or the wires at the battery. I tried starting it on neutral and shake the shifter and neither worked. they do not scan codes where I live so that is out of the option. I checked the Starter Relay and it looks like this. 
is this normal?

That's not a relay and who knows what it's to. Looks in good shape.
BTW - Codes are taken free at some places and not allowed for free in some places so you just have to pay something.
It that plus was in question as the cause for any reason back probing wires with a pin and ohm meter while connected for just continuity would be enough at each wire to know each makes the connection,

It literally says Toyota Starter Relay 5H25.
but it is suppose to have all that goo then.
okay if that is so then i should get a continuity tool then and well it is gonna be expensive getting my car anywhere. As the tool is like $10, anything in particular i should check?

The item in my view is just a male, covered plug to something that would receive that with a Q-Tip in the picture. If that is the new one for a starter relay isn't not what you asked for or we/I'm confused.
The ohm test you plug that back in. Use a pin (T- pins like used for quilting are handy but you are touching back side of each spade connection while connected to the other part that it has just continuity. That one looks fine and some grease you are adding or was there fine too.
If somehow you know for sure this "plug" is what it is doesn't make proper contact just try very slight twisting of the spades when apart so it grabs better.
I don't think this is the problem at all so just put that back together.

No, he is holding a relay.
That is just grease on the contacts to prevent corrosion. That is a good thing.

That relay is humongous! When it latches it must sound like a screen door slamming.

Thanks. Again, that was hard to see box behind the plug so move on here. OP - on these box type relays when you are sure you have the correct one used that doesn't transfer power to the right terminal by an electro-magnet inside and actual points you usually can tap the thing on something and it will work again.
If throwing one out it will come apart and you can see how it works inside. Points like ignition points only small and some fussy to conditions in no time or some last forever?

I hardly ever see those Toyota relays go bad. If you hear a clack from under the hood when your attempting to get it to crank, it is more than likely a starter problem. Check powers and ground at the starter motor when it doesn't want to start.

Well I want to thank you guys for your support and it seem that it was not the relay, and im gonna get the battery tested. but after seeing a vid on the starter i'm positive that it is the starter. i just wanted to make sure everything is working. and you guys have been quite helpful. I believe I have isolated the starter as the problem and will start addressing that. hopefully a wack or two will get it working.

So i got a few wacks into the starter and now the car starts again. I know that this is just a temporary solution to get the car going. Does anyone have an estimate of how long this will last? I'm saving up money to fix it but curious how long the starter will last being wacked by a hammer.

I'll try as hard as I can NOT to mess up this time.
If the hammer on starter trick works when you are sure the problem exists then the best fix for most folks would be a new or rebuilt starter.
Electric motors with brushes can respond to that as a trick. It may not work one more time or work for several more times. I'll put that in the emergency trick category that you should NOT count on to work nor a solution. Brushes in there are glazed up and doubt you are into taking the thing apart so it's practical to replace it,

OK - Some last suggestions for a replacement: Have negative battery cable disconnected and use a memory saver if you are able. Reason is power is to the starter and you'll have metal tools on "hot" items meaning empowered.
Keep the "core" if rebuilt they charge if you don't give it back but can do that later when new/replacement proves itself later still get that $$ back. If somehow the new one doesn't fit right or a part you needed from the old you haven't lost it right away.
This really makes "brick and mortar" stores the choice not so much or as easy by mail order.
If cheap enough and give a hoot, take the old one apart and see the problems it had and lose any deposit on it if any.
Clean and lube up electrical connections and use "electric grease" - just ask for it.
Do not overtighten to avoid busting off nut to stud connections on the replacement which hopefully will come with new ones.
Look at the old one hard first. If somehow there's no way to remove it without removing particularly exhaust parts think hard if you can handle it if those do NOT cooperate or worse break! That would make this common job a real problem for most so use judgement on that.
