I have a 1987 Mercury Cougar 5.0 engine. A few days ago I started the car and I heard a very loud cracking sound, like a tree branch snapping, coming from my engine. It took a few cranks for the engine to turn over but it finally caught and started. When I let it idle I can hear a rattling noise coming from the engine. I can't visibly see anything wrong in the engine bay. This morning I started the car again, heard the cracking sound (not as loud this time) and the rattling noise and now my car won't start. When I turn the key I can hear something spinning like it's trying to catch and start, but nothing will catch.

A couple things to rule out is the fan for radiator, motor mounts and take belts off and spin the items checking for freeplay or the pulleys that should free spin do so silently, T
