Determine where the knock is originating from. There are lots of possibilities.

Which engine?

Can you record the noise and upload it to a video hosting site and then paste the link in here?

May just be belt noise. Just spray it with some water and see if noise goes away for just a short while - costs nothing to try. If that works replace the belt with high quality only - some are noisy right away and can sound like a real mechanical problem?

If no change at all move on to other possible things,

may have used wrong word.mabe hammer is better. engine runs fine then loud banging or hammer. once or twice then smoothes out runs fine. if car is in gear or being driven no issue.

That doesn't sound so great now. Another thing is just look at harmonic balancer to see if it's in perfect plane with other pulleys. Rare side to me but reported a lot at this site of balancer coming apart or no longer in line where it should be. If so and it fell off no telling the damage it might be able to make,
