My mechanic is stuck. I brought my 1998 LeSabre in because it was making an intermittant noise which sounded like a belt or pully. He replaced the water pump, tension adjuster and belt (which were all bad) but the moise was still there. He then discovered that when you pulled out the oil cap assembly the noise stopped! There has to be some kind of vacuum problem or something but he has never seen it and no one he talked to has either. He's still looking, any ideas?

By removing oil cap you are equalizing pressure in the crankcase which should be in a slight vacuum by the PCV system. Check that and any thing involved with the crankcase for sealing it or a hose to it that could be split or who knows quite what making the noise while it sucks in some air - btw - that should show up and change idle if you sprayed water or carb cleaner at suspect areas. Of course use all caution with hot parts or hot engine if testing that way,

Thanks. The mechanic finally figured it out. There's a hole in the lower intake manifold! $600!! I bummer because I just $600 into it and wanted it for just a short time until I got a better car. Not sure what to do now!

That's more than likely, a hole in the plenum (upper intake). They would 'eat out' around the EGR ports, as I remember.
