1999 Honda Accord Engine Noise / Rattle Sign In

Hi there, I have a 1999 Honda Accord LX, manual transmission, 260,000 miles on it. Car has been maintained well. Lately it has developed a noise, only when accelerating hard, especially when going uphill. The noise stops immediately when I take my foot off the gas. The noise started out faint and has progressed to almost a rattling sound over the course of about 6 months. I have taken it to my mechanic 5 times and they cannot diagnose it. The car runs great otherwise, no loss of power, still gets average 27mpg. I do know that the catalytic converter is bad, but it was bad long before this problem started. The car does burn a lot of oil. I have crawled underneath and the exhaust heat shield does not seem to be loose or rattling. The sound only occurs when the car is in gear, if I rev the engine in neutral it sounds perfect.

I am not a DIY'er and have no knowledge of cars other than what I have researched online trying to figure this out. I'm just trying to come up with something to tell my mechanic to check. I love this car and don't want the engine to blow up because they can't figure out what is wrong. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. I am considering taking it to the dealer for diagnosing but I know that is expensive and thought I would try here first.

Here is a link to the video where you can hear the noise.

Thanks for any help,
Robyn

Your description sounds liked it could be a broken catalyst but it needs to be checked by a professional that is there to listen to it.

Not trying to sound like a dick, but if your mechanic needs someone who admits he isn't even a DIY and has no idea about this to tell him what to look for, you need a different mechanic.

I honestly hate when people who know nothing about what they are talking about try to tell me how to do my job because of something they saw on the internet.

Take it to the man, tell him what it is doing and let him tell you the issue after he has had time to properly diagnose it. Then pay him and enjoy a repaired car. Trust me, he isn't going to appreciate you trying to tell him what it is when you even admit you don't have a clue about cars and are surfing forums. I don't know what it is you do for a living, but if its something I have no knowledge of I'm sure you wouldn't like it if I came to your office telling you to take care of something I didn't understand while I was telling you how to do your job. Makes sense, right?

Re: 1999 Honda Accord Engine Noise / Rattle Sign In

I'm glad you stated that you're not trying to sound like a dick, because otherwise I would have thought you were.

I'm looking for helpful advice here, not someone telling me to take it to a mechanic and let them do their job. I described the situation as well as I could and posted a link to the video so the experts on here could hear the noise and offer their opinions. I thought that was what this forum was for, but I may be mistaken.

I have a long standing relationship with my mechanic, he is a close friend and I don't want to take it to someone else. I am trying to get some ideas of what this might be so that I can TACTFULLY ask him, do you think it could be this?

If anyone is actually interested in helping, I did replace the catalytic converter and that did not fix the noise.
