Been working on my firebird here lately trying to solve it's minor issue but yesterday I took some time away and put a new outer tie rod on my 2000 dodge neon. I managed to get it on and everything with no issue and took it out on a drive to see how it was doing. Alignment didn't appear to be an issue although I will be going to get it aligned but onto the problem. Later that night I got out again and noticed a knocking sound coming from the passenger side wheel. The sound seems to intensify when I brake lightly and it doesn't seem to occur in reverse. I can also hear the sound somewhat when I hit bumps or holes in the road. Took the tire off and the caliper seems to be fine although it did have a broken bolt and I had to helicoil a new one in about 6 months ago. It's also missing a lug bolt but hasn't had any issues until now. I did however notice the tire seems to be slightly slanting inward vertically like / and I do mean slightly and perhaps it's just me reading too much into it. Any ideas before I go and replace several parts? Brake pads changed about six months ago including drums in rear.

! Broken lug stud was that AND a fixed caliper bolt with a heli coil repair??!! What has this thing been exposes to? Now noise from a tie rod end and whatever you did to remove the old one probably caused trauma to something probably the brake as that changes it. Fix the dang lug nut! Plain safety anything about that. One of 5 if equipped that way is fine to move the car on site to repair not use it like that. Assorted wheels and the contact pressure to rotors and hub all compromised never mind all others now subject to snapping all at once with the wrong pot hole or who knows? T

The heli coil repair was a suggestion from someone at Advanced Auto, it served it's purpose and the car isn't really used all too much but I do plan on replacing it here soon. I changed the tie rod on the drivers side and the sound is coming from the passenger side? I'm not too sure how that affected the rotor or caliper on the passenger side?

I'm going out on a limb here. Heli-Coil has it's place but brakes are NOT EVER ON THE LIST! Parts outlets sell parts and are not required to know Jack Poo about cars really even if some do it remains buyer beware. The noise can travel from one side to the other fooling you. If one failed check EVERYTHING to do with steering, suspension and brake parts. You have a warning so it should show itself. Not using the car much isn't an excuse as if a wheel falls off or total loss of control is pending it's a death trap - fix it and get the whole part where that Heli-Coil was used. It already stressed out once to break and that repair can't be as good. Alignment required and you know that but find this noise and fix it before as that fix will possibly require yet another alignment, T

I'm going to have to look at this Thursday and see what exactly needs to be replaced as far as the caliper goes. I'm thinking perhaps the spindle and caliper as I'm not sure what the caliper bolts to exactly. I will also change out the lug nut stud too while I'm at it and see what happens. As for steering and suspension I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. The first time the bolt broke the car made a similar sound so perhaps the issue is with the caliper and replacing that will solve the problem but who knows. Thanks for the help and if you have any info as for what specific parts I should be looking at after and if the caliper and lug nut stud don't solve the problem it would be greatly appreciated. I wont have access to the internet to look a lot of this stuff up before hand so being prepared before I set out to fix this is my ultimate goal.

If rust is the issue causing things to break you are stuck to replace things that ordinarily wouldn't be a service item. Two things have broken so why is that? By mistake/error or a problem out of norms? You need to be able to name the parts involved OR look at a diagram one of the guys here may have one of front end parts and post it for you. Guessing on my part that you used a pickle fork (my name for them) to remove a tie rod end. The trauma of that who knows what didn't like it? That could be right along to how your steering wheel turns the rack! Parts everywhere from inner tie rod ends, rack and pinion and its mounts, ball joints, struts - pretty much anything that is holding the items and suspending the car - all of them. How you check each is assorted ways of prying and hoisting knowing where loads are. Alignment person should be trained to look for worn items or an alignment isn't going to be right including tire pressure if off. I'll try to find at least a basic diagram of how this one is if needed. You can too out there or look at the screen the parts places are looking at. Don't feel bad if you need hands on help from a pro and sometimes you need a person to push on this while you look at that type thing in assorted problems or plain work. You have a noise and that's your warning to find and fix it, T
