I do realize my car needs brake work among other things. But I can afford it for at least another week and I have been okay until now with the mile a day I drive. Today, instead of just the brakes grinding, they went all the way to the floor. Then something started rattling around, like metal bouncing of the ground near the driver's side front. I'm afraid to even drive to a mechanic. What could that metallic rattling be?

This is what happens when you ignore car repairs.
It sounds like you have just doubled to cost of repairing your brakes. When they started grinding, you just kept driving it until the piston popped right out of the caliper and the brake pad has likely dislocated and either fell out or jammed in the turning rotor.

You went from pads and maybe a rotor or two to adding calipers and maybe ever some of the mounting housings. Please get the car fixed before you kill somebody.

Ditto big time with the Hammer! One problem is you should be getting some routine service that gives you some advance warning of plain brake life. If not find a place that does or will.

This suggests they were so far beyond safe it was insane! That's just not good, safe for you or others who share the roads as we all do.

Just IMO: Cars cost us all a huge part of budgets and we want the most for our money - that's no surprise. Brakes in particular are just plain better done early - not at the last second or indication of a problem. Same goes for tires and other things with cars. Tires are legal till they are near bald but no car has any more control over the road than the ability of tire to road contact. Amazing but the first legal 1/3 is the best and it's a fast run downhill from there with those.

Many times with car maintenance items it's pay dirt to be "pro active" instead of "re-active"

OK - I've said my piece,

T
