2005 Chrysler Sebring 2.4 DOHC Sign In

I drive a 2005 Chrysler Sebring. It has been doing great up until a couple of months ago. The check engine light came on, and it had a very rough idle. I took it to a guy that my aunt knows, he replaced the spark plugs and wires. That didn't help any. I've been driving it anyways because I have to.

Well....Today when I was driving it, lately the past week it's been having trouble starting. Won't start the first time, have to try a second time. Now when I come to a complete stop the car dies...it makes a clicking noise that gets faster when I accelerate or press the gas pedal while in park. Engine light starts to blink when idle..also, very very rough idle. Any ideas? It's a 2.4 DOHC can anyone help?

Make sure all maintenance is up to date and get quality code reading especially for a car that new,

I do always change the oil and check all my fluids, do you think it could be the alternator or a belt? I don't think the alternator though because everything seems to work well in that department. I don't know much about cars..I am taking it to a guy tomorrow to let him hook it up and check the error on it. Thanks for help

You really need to get a handle on this as quick as possible.....When the SES starts flashing you are doing serious damage to your cat.

When the light is on, it's yelling for help......When it starts flashing, it's screaming.

Just realize when your car is running poorly like that and you keep driving it you can be doing serious damage to the engine and other systems......

It's just so difficult to know if a check engine light and a noise are related. Noises are chased down various ways but get the codes read will help tons to lead to why it's not running properly,

Ok thanks both for your help..I didn't know it was that bad, I build PC's but I'm pretty ignorant with cars. I won't drive it then. I'll post what code it comes up as tomorrow after I get the reading on it. I didn't know that when it's blinking it means something really bad. It only blinks when idle though. Thanks again.

When the fuel trims get to a point where it can be harmful to the converter, the SES will start flashing. When the trims fall back to a point where it's not as critical the light will go back to solid.

Getting off idle cleaned it out enough to drop the trims and stop the flashing.....I'm assuming off idle it was running a little bit better...

Yes, off idle is runs ok. When idle though it's extremely rough and shaky. So ..I'm not so good with cars like I said..what are fuel trims exactly? Something that monitors how much fuel to push through the injector? So how would that be repaired? I used some gumout the other day, would that help any? Is that what the clicking sound is that gets faster when I accelerate? Thanks again for your time and answers I appreciate it.

Re: 2005 Chrysler Sebring 2.4 DOHC Sign In

That would be a #4 misfire.

If you are doing this yourself with basic tools. If the plugs & wires haven't been changed then this would be a good place to start. I can't see the whole thread right now so aren't sure if this has been done or not. If it has already been done then you are probably going to have to take it in.....

A couple of things you could try before taking it in would be to swap the #4 injector with another one, if the misfire moves then problem is in the injector, also it would be a good idea to take a compression reading to make sure there are no mechanical problems with the engine.....

Long & short term fuel trims in a nutshell is just what the computer is doing in an attempt to control the O2 sensors. A tech can look at this data and see if the computer is adding fuel or taking fuel away. This aids in diagnosing a problem. It helps to know what you are looking for...

Just another thought, I see where the plugs & wires have been changed so more than likely this isn't the problem. You can also get a spark tester and hook it up to the #4 wire and make sure the coil is working........

Well what you said does help a lot, and thanks for your time. I still am really ignorant with cars though. So this is not a REALLY big issue right? I mean, it won't cost a ton to fix. Also, does this decrease my gas mileage ??

Do the tests Sidom has suggested. Diagnose first, then the fix. The cost is still unknown. A misfire certainly isn't helping your MPGs and ignoring it too long could cost you a cat/converter,

Re: 2005 Chrysler Sebring 2.4 DOHC Sign In

Well unfortunately you've already tried the easy inexpensive stuff and that wasn't the problem....... I guess at this point we are gonna hope for either a bad coil pack or bad injector but those need to be tested 1st...... A compression test does need to be take as well...

Just one note that is off the subject a bit but I'll mention just in case you aren't aware of this, it has to do with overheating....... If your car ever starts to overheat to the point where the gauge is pegged, you need to stop and shut if off immediately. I just mention this because this year alone I've probably had 10 no starts that wound up being fried engines and they all had a common theme. The engines were overheating, the people were between 3 & 8 miles of where they were going and "just wanted to get there". None of them could understand how they ruined their engines going such a "short" distance. They were all aware they were overheating but thought "driving it easy", "turning off the a/c & all accessories" "turning the wheel slow" (didn't really understand that one) would make it ok to continue to drive an engine with a pegged temp gauge...

If you temp gauge is pegged you need to stop, even a block is too far. Obviously if you are in danger or at great risk you would need to keep driving, personal safety is way more important than any machine....... 1:00 am in the morning and having to be at work at 6:00 I don't think would qualify (another thing I heard and no they didn't make it to work that day because their engine was locked up)
