2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L Engine Noise Sign In

My wife drives a 2007 Honda Odyssey EX-L with the 6-cyl VCM engine. Currently engine has 93k miles on it. Last week a very loud banging occurred in the engine. She described it as sounding like someone was shaking a metal ball in a metal cup. Fortunately she was only about 1/2 mile from our mechanic and drove right there. Pulling in, the mechanic couldn't tell her to shut the engine off quick enough. Initial inspection by the mechanic, the engine was turned back on, the noise replicated and was determined to be coming from the upper end of the rear of the engine. Engine was turned off, a scope (camera from what I understand) was used to look through the engine (parts of it at least) and no damage found. Engine started a 2nd time and no noise. Flash forward 1 week after 2 mechanics have looked at/listened to the vehicle put a scope in to the engine, they find no damage and the sound won't replicate. They checked the timing belt, tensioner, motor mounts and heat shield as well. Only explanation given is that some debris was impeding something in the upper end that has since worked it's way out. Our original mechanic drove the vehicle most of this past week in various situations to attempt to get it to replicate, but to no avail. We picked up the car 2 days ago and I drove it about 100 miles in traffic, highway and start/stop (shopping) situations with no unusual noise.

Any suggestions? While I'd love to believe that this was a "fluke" and we're fine to drive the car as usual, I'm a bit concerned that a larger problem has been missed.

Scary not knowing why. At least things common were checked and you may not ever know for sure if it doesn't do that again. Still on my maybe list would be exhaust parts not just shields but connections, hangers nuts and bolts, flanges and so on. You or with help can tap on things carefully with plastic or rubber hammer to see if one or more are bad and somehow jammed up enough to shut up for now.

Debris from something now missing? Happens but if gone is guessing only now,

It's possible that something was sucked into one of the cylinders, possibly a large piece of carbon that eventually traveled out the exhaust.
