My question really isn't worthy of these forums but the Chrysler forum has been useless for earlier issues so...

I've had this Town & Country for 4-5 months now. I got in it today and headed down my gravel road at maybe 5mph. Before I'd gone a block I started hearing this sharp rapping sound that sounded like someone knocking on the car's plastic dash with a coin (sort of), about three evenly-spaced raps per second. The sound wasn't the least bit muffled and I felt pretty sure the source was inside the cabin somewhere in front of the driver's seat, i.e. behind the dash.

I stopped the car and put it in park and the rapping continued. I turned the key off and the rapping continued for maybe 20 seconds before stopping. I don't recall if it slowed down as it stopped or if it became fainter as it was stopping.

After it stopped, I started the car and continued on, drove it maybe 100 miles with no repeat of the behavior.

Any ideas/wild guesses, etc?

It sounds like you are describing a stripped out temperature door actuator. They have plastic gears and will make a noise like that when they get stripped.

You can try turning the temp in the opposite direction to see if maybe it will stop to confirm the issue.

Unbelievable. Is there anything you DON'T know about cars? There's an excellent chance I cranked the driver's-side temp control from hot to cold this morning before the noise started, and I was just now able to cause a repeat of the noise by changing the temp control.

I'm really very relieved. It doesn't seem to be an expensive part and the YouTube video I found makes it look pretty easy to replace (though I may let my mechanic do it when I take it in for valve cover gaskets in a few weeks - interior trim panels and I don't usually get along all that well).

Can't thank you enough, HT, but thank you!!

Should be pretty easy as long as you're a contortionist.

Laughing... yeah, I'm 68 and even less of a contortionist than I used to be; another reason to pay some whippersnapper to do the grunt work on this one. Thanks again buddy; you're a lifesaver!

Poverty won out over better judgment and I attempted this replacement today (stripped out temperature door actuator).

While removing one of the screws (A) from the blend door actuator, I dropped it into the gap at the top of the duct (B) (I actually don't know what that piece is but it looks like a duct). I heard the screw hit plastic, then nothing, so it either didn't bounce or maybe fell through onto the carpet. I wound up using the screw from the duct (C) to secure the actuator.

What the missing screw looked like (taken from somebody's YouTube)

More context, also from someone else's YouTube, showing the entire duct and actuator.

So I'm wondering how to hunt for the missing screw. That seems like a dumb question but the only way to hunt behind that duct/vent/whatever it is is to start taking stuff apart and I'm not up to that - replacing that little actuator damn near killed me today. I can kind of reach a fingertip into it here and there but can't feel any loose screw. I removed the top screw so I can get the duct to jiggle just a little bit (it's still secured elsewhere) and don't hear a screw rattling inside.

I've considered that it may have fallen through to the floor behind the vertical dash (with all the heater controls, etc.) The photo above shows hos the side of the vertical dash is fastened... should I be able to just pull those fasteners out?

Any other ideas for searching? I stuck a little pen-magnet down into the duct but didn't catch anything. I'd be okay hunting down a replacement screw (self-tapping Torx 20) if aI knew where to look (or even a generic screw from the hardware store to go back into that duct, but I'm concerned about the screw I dropped. Is it likely to encounter any moving parts (fans/squirrel cages, etc) in that duct?

Sorry these pics are so huge, I have no idea how to reduce their size in the post edit form.

It's real easy to reduce the size. Just go into the image software and click on the icon shown in the picture.

Once you change the percentage you will have to refresh the question to see the results.

Yeah, still a little on the large size.

Ok, I went down another 30%. New camera, much better photos than my 6-year-old smartphone... guess I got carried away!
