2009 honda accord 2.4 VTEC Sign In

Looking at a honda accord to buy When we started it up it had this clacking sound by the motor pulleys that went away once it was started , the person said it only does it on a cold start and sure enough after our test drive we shut it off and started it up without the noise . She said her mechanic told her it was something to do with injectors or something as she wasn't sure what he said but that it wasn't serious and hardly worth fixing . It's a friend so we trust her and the car has only 87k miles , we'd like to buy it but I'm wondering about that start up noise . Does anyone know what it could be or what's involved in fixing it ?

It's nothing to do with injectors.

What it sounds like is the timing chain rattling from being loose. It goes away right away because it uses a hydraulic tensioner that is not holding oil pressure when parked. As soon as the engine builds up oil pressure the tensioner takes up the slack in the chain.

This could be because of poor maintenance in oil changes and there is some sludge or the chain has stretched and the tensioner needs to be replaced along with the chain.

And in that case it should be taken care of before a bigger problem occurs ? It's pretty pronounced and I wouldn't want to hear it , maybe I can get them down on the price .

Oh Doc, what to do and YOU don't own it - YET? I think it's like HT says that it's an oil or oil pressure issue just because it didn't do it a second time in front of you. You just said it's pretty pronounced? Can't be good.

Oil pressure or it's not holding residual pressure if it totally shuts up as in for the rest of a day bet you don't know doesn't seem like the shop that said injectors does either.
It's just partly mechanical vs missing a deal or dealing with a friend you trust mix.
Perhaps if this isn't sure either just plain pass and keep the friend or offer a price as if it needs a whole engine I do fear that for assorted reasons may have wild oil neglect or some problem with a sudden loss of oil in its history.
IDK these cars so well admittedly but basics are the same with a oil based noise or is it something else? Seems it's plain not sure.
What would it take to get this properly diagnosed without ticking off a friend is what I'm focused on? You might see oil sludge thru a filler cap or evidence on a dipstick IMO these cars purr on and on for sometimes mega miles or blow up with a lurking problem that might be what is feared whole engine job then what would you do?

It's just a lousy feeling about this scene I'd pass. There are other cars and deals to be had out there,

We bought it and took it to a honda dealer , they said it was the VTC actuator , it was covered under the warranty and cost nothing . It had nothing to do with poor oil maintenance they just go bad . All's good .

? OK, it's fixed so soon to close this out. I'm just curious how the heck this was under warranty? 10-11 years old purchased from a "friend."
Maybe a recall of something I can't see warranty unless just some favor pulled??

It's got 78K on the OD. , They said it was warranted up to 110K or something , I had no idea , we got her down to $6,000 for it , there's shops I trust but for some reason I bought it to the honda dealer . I didn't have time to work on it out in the driveway in between rain drops . Now I wonder why your reply didn't show up in my E-mail .

It's a site quirk I've never figured out. Some notices are real late and other don't show? IDK - I just check the whole place for new if here.
Glad you found it covered there's nothing to do but let them deal with it whatever it is.
Can be "silent" recall extensions that do NOT expire not so common but do exist.
Let it be and hope it's all wonderful when done suggests you got a great deal on this thing IMO,

Tom
