98 Toyota Corolla engine? noise with snow/rain Sign In

I have a '98 Toyota Corolla and i've noticed that at times when the ground is wet (when it snows or rains) my car makes this strange noise when you accelerate and the only way i can think of to describe it would be that it's similar to the sound of a muffler with a hole in it.

Any idea as to what this could be?

How well does the car run in the wet weather? Does it have a hard time starting? Does it buck or backfire when you give it a lot of gas?

It runs the same as always, it starts fine and accelerates the same--the only difference is just that it makes that noise while accelerating and you can feel it.. it's like a sputtering? i guess you could say.

This is one I would have to hear to diagnose. All I can tell you is to let the car idle and spray the ignition wires with water from a spray bottle. If the sputter starts, replace the ignition wires. The only common denominator here is that you say it is when it is wet outside, and since you say a sputtering noise is made, I'm thinking ignition system problem. Good luck and keep us posted on what is found.

?? Does this noise sound come from the front, middle or back? Can you tell?

Engine cold can you twist and make a connection move? Just 2 more cents, T

Re: 98 Toyota Corolla engine? noise with snow/rain Sign In

Hi Guys,

I have a 2001 standard, 150k (kilometers), it also sounds very noisy when accelerating, in winter slush hits the underside, it is almost as if the engine exhaust seems to separate at the header/manifold for a few seconds. Runs great like a bat outta hell, ease off the gas, and within 20-30 seconds she's back to normal.
Lately now in the summer I can almost bring this condition on, as you say when it's wet. But mostly under hard throttle, as if the torque separates at the manifold to exhaust junction.

But my other problem is a annoying rattle, driving straight in line, and mostly below 30mph, any slight road imperfection causes the rattle to both front wheels. Heavy bumps not so much, but sometimes even an expansion joint will do it.

Wheel nuts tight, callipers fine, bearings no play, checked all the bushings clean not worn. Ball joint tested no wheel play 6-12 or 3-9. It is metallic rattle but by turning in curves almost stops, head straight and it's back. Could it be steering related, very little play from wheel to wheel? Worn rack?
Any Ideas?

Please start a new question of your own for this. It gets way too confusing to work on more than one car in the same question.

Agree with Hammer. Not to mention that the thread is over two years old.Unsure
